Swiss ski jumper wins Games' 1st gold medal

Ski jumper Simon Ammann of Switzerland has won the first gold medal of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games.

Ammann claimed the title in the men's normal hill ski jumping event on Saturday at Whistler Olympic Park with 276.5 total points.

Adam Malysz of Poland won silver with 269.5 points.

Gregor Schlierenzauer of Austria finished with 268 points to take the bronze.

Ammann was a double Olympic champion at the 2002 Salt Lake Games, claiming both the normal hill individual and large hill individual events.

He's also the current World Cup leader.

The event began at 9:45 a.m. PT with 51 jumpers fighting for the 40 spots up for grabs. The world's Top 10 had already qualified.
