Welcome to Arts and Letters

Annette Wyandotte - Dean

Welcome to the Majors and Prospective Majors of Arts and Letters

You’re on the home web site of majors in the humanities.  Our programs offer the most flexible majors you could pursue, and flexibility is smart in a fast-changing world.  Arts and Letters majors understand persons as expressive beings; they develop expertise in speaking, reading, and writing English, as well as French, German, Spanish or Japanese, and some of them express themselves by creating visual artifacts or performing drama or music.  Employers seek skilled communicators.

Our faculty are committed to not only giving you the tools to succeed professionally but to be an informed citizen in a global society guided by democratic principles. They will help you develop the qualities to do problem-solving and decision-making and to devise creative solutions to resolve conflicts which are complex because they involve people and people are complex.  Employers value these skills.

Our courses create learning communities to inspire and equip you to become the best, most independent, confident, and competent person you can be.  We offer you an education that crosses cultural, philosophical and artistic boundaries so that you can develop your own aesthetic and intellectual voice by knowing and experiencing the perspectives and values of others.  Employers benefit from these abilities.

Among our current faculty of 45,

  •  1 of 3 have been invited to be members of the IU system-wide organization called FACET as faculty who have established a record of excellence in teaching,  and
  • 1 of 10 have been honored as IU Southeast’s Distinguished Teacher or  received the IU Southeast award for Distinguished Research or Creativity

We are the only school in the IU system to have a brass band, including Bloomington, we award scholarships in music to non-majors as well as majors, and we invite members of the campus and area community to participate in all of our ensembles: the choir, orchestra, concert band, and brass band.

We are also the home of New  Dynamic Records, which

  • Is 1 of a handful of universities nation-wide to have our own recording label
  • Has already produced 3 CDs in our 3-year existence by nationally or internationally recognized musicians, some of whom have been or will be in residence here for a time
  • Became the first internationally recognized recording label in the history of Indiana University

We would love to share more with you about our programs in
