Sony’s Second Life-esque online community, Home, is finally
going to be released tomorrow in the form of an open beta.
The PlayStation 3 hub has been repeatedly delayed since it
was first revealed last year, but has since rallied more support from third
parties.
The service will allow players to create their own avatar
and then chat and interact with other players. Users can also customize their
clothing and decorate their own “living space” with furniture and decorations.
While Home is free, players can purchase premium clothing,
furniture, accessories, and content through the PlayStation Store.
The third parties – which include Activision, Diesel,
Disney, Electronic Arts, Lucas Arts, Red Bull, Sony Pictures, and Ubisoft –
will create rooms for their products and games. Diesel, for example, will
provide designs for avatar clothing, and Red Bull will feature a mini-game for
its Air Race series.
The Central Plaza,
which is where users start off in Home, will also offer a four-player
mini-game.
I’ve expressed doubts about how interesting
Home could possibly be in execution, and those doubts, for the most part,
remain. However, the inclusion of mini-games and additional content could push
the service into something more interactive. At the very least, it seems it’ll
be an interesting supplement to the PlayStation Store (and an excellent way for
companies to advertise their brand).
Actual hands-on impressions will follow over the next few
days.
