Sean Ono Lennon defends John Lennon's appearance in Citroen car advert

TV ad features former Beatle 'to keep him in public consciousness', according to son

John Lennon's son Sean has said his mother Yoko Ono allowed video footage of the former Beatle to be used in a car advert to keep him "in the public consciousness".

Footage of Lennon, filmed in his Beatles days, appears in the advert for the Citroen DS3, which you can watch below.

Responding to criticism about the advert on his Twitter page, Sean Ono Lennon denied that his mother allowed Lennon to appear in the campaign for money reasons, instead stating that it was an attempt to keep him in the public eye.

"She did not do it for money. Has to do w hoping to keep dad in public consciousness. No new LPs, so TV ad is exposure to young," Ono Lennon said, adding: "Look, TV ad was not for money. It's just hard to find new ways to keep dad in the new world. Not many things as effective as TV."

A third tweet from Ono Lennon again denied that the advert was for financial gain, though admitted that he had only just seen the advert himself.

"Having just seen ad I realize why people are mad," he wrote. "But intention was not financial, was simply wanting to keep him out there in the world."

“If it’s allowed to happen, every Beatles song ever recorded is going to be advertising women’s underwear and sausages. We’ve got to put a stop to it in order to set a precedent. Otherwise it’s going to be a free-for-all. It’s one thing when you’re dead, but we’re still around! They don’t have any respect for the fact that we wrote and recorded those songs, and it was our lives.” George Harrison in 1987 about Nike using The Beatles to adverise trainers. I agreed with him then, and still do now, and find this advert to be in very poor taste.

So now his shrill, shrieking, harpie of a mom is having him call himself Sean ONO Lennon? I mean, c'mon now. It's not like no one knows who this kid is or who his father is, so other than complete narccissim - which explains this ad - mainly done to keep YOKO in the public eye as she's a NOBODY without John running interferance for her. It's no secret that absolutely NO ONE outside of HER inner circle, as well as a few sycophant, lapdog "yes men" who followed John around, i.e. that plastic freak, Elliot Mintz, liked this woman. She had zero talent and regardless of how much John protested the opposite, anyone with a modicum of musical knowledge knew this to be very much true.As for the anger behind the ad, why now? If Yoko wasn't such a narccissist, NONE of the Beatles tunes would have been sold off as if they mean nothing except the money garnered from their sale, so this isn't anything new, really.Sad, but so very true. The one person I happen to feel the most for is Julian. A true musical talent (that genome OBVIOUSLY skipped Sean) and looks so much like his father, it's scary, but he got shafted from the word go as soon as Yoko came into the picture, being the insecure narccissist she is, she couldn't handle someone like Julian stealing her limelight.By the way, ever notice how much Yoko resembles 'Cousin It' from "The Addams Family"? And, if that wasn't spooky enough, when you hear Cousin It speak, 'It' SOUNDS EXACTLY like Yoko's shrieking.

Citroen is doing exactly what the Maestro's talkin' about. They've updated the car instead of putting out a carbon copy of the old one. Lighten up people!

What a terrible advert, it's vulgar to associate such idiotic sentiments with a dead man... like the guy above said, i don't think people are going to forget about Lennon anytime soon, what with a reissue of all the Beatles stuff a few months back, and even a bloody videogame, a stupid car ad was hardly essential to keep his flame alight was it...guess it was just a silly move that Ono will hopefully now regret

Nothing to do with keeping him in the public eye and everything to do with continuing to fund that talentless woman at the expense of his memory. It's frankly an insult to even suggest this might have had more altruistic intentions.

Gotta love thirteenburn's comments here... Specially love the one about Julian being a 'true musical talent'- nah hes just as shit as his brother....they both look like their father though..And in any case who really gives a shit about the clip being used in a car ad? Its not a beatles song.. its a part of an old interview.. if they want to sell it then whats the big deal? (hes dead? hes a beatle? so what?) theres gotta be more important things in the world to be upset about than this bollocks

Oh we live in such confusing times! COMPLETELY agree with the sentiment of the advert and the quote - just can't quite believe that they're using a retro-icon such as Lennon to deliver it. In some ways we are really creating again; we're producing NEW ideas, NEW technologies and ways of communicating and progressing but nobody's found anything new to SAY; certainly there's nothing new in advertising or with this rather ugly car (a very tired early 20thC technology!).However, I guess Lennon was a pretty contradictory guy and though he'd have hated this sorry, confused advert he'd probably have enjoyed the controversy he's still able to attract.Pretty sorry stuff though really.

I think the big question here is... Does anyone really believe John Lennon would have chosen to drive a Citroen?Err, no.And who on Earth is that trying to take off Lennon's voice? It's a piss poor drama school Scouse accent, if I've ever one.

It is very insulting I've got to agree...smacks of desperation. Not enough for John Lennon to be in one of the world's biggest (and greatest) bands...to have forged a successful solo career, to be an outspoken voice for various causes and world peace? The interview in question is from Lennon and McCartney's promotional tour of New York, to promote Apple. As far as I can remember Lennon's on superb form...just bigging up their plans for a new record label by all accounts. So why not use something Lennon himself actually said? There's loads of soundbites, quotes, interviews where John has said something meaningful and profound. It's such a bad welding job on the audio/visual it's unbelievable. Forrest fucking Gump did better than that. If anything, the people running his estate (as a rule I never slag Yoko because it's pointless...things can't be changed) clearly don't understand who he was. The worlds spinning in his grave come to mind. I think they've gone for the pensioners though...those old enough to remember Lennon and all the fire and intensity he had in the 60's and 70's. But there's been a few generations in between who genuinely believe his music and lyrics STOOD for something a whole lot better than this. Any Beatle/Lennon fan will be and rightfully should be embarrassed by this advert. Fair play to Sean for not letting it pass by without comment but his response was very weak. Keeping him in the public consciousness? There's bands STUDYING every move he made...every naunce in his voice, what he wore in 1965...complete rubbish (and an insult) to suggest people forget about great music and talent. Anyway I think I've vented my spleen enough here. Shit car too.

John Lennon's 'granny' spectacles were world-renowned - but The Byrds' Roger McGuinn is convinced that The Beatles star stole the look off him in the mid-60s.
