Northeast Storm Leads to Major Power Outages

By Josh Rogers on Friday, February 26, 2010.

The winter storm packing high winds has left 700,000 homes and businesses without power across the Northeast.

New Hampshire Public Radio's Josh Rogers has more.

Wind gusts that topped ninety miles an hour in some places combined with heavy rain and snow to bring down hundreds of trees and power lines.

300,000 homes and businesses have lost power in New Hampshire alone, and the state's emergency operations center is running on a generator.

Martin Murray, spokesman for PSNH, says restoring power to everyone will take time.

"We are expecting a multi-day event - we can't say at this point how long it will be to get all customers back on, we're going to need a little bit of time to narrow that down. But we know it's going to take days."

The state's utility companies say they've reached out for additional line crews from as far away as New Brunswick, Canada and Pennsylvania.

Safety officials are urging people to stay clear of fallen trees or any sagging or downed lines.

NH Storms Power Outages PSNH Sucks

If PSNH would do their jobs by cutting branches and trees that are near power lines like they use too and STOPPED, Then there would not be as many power outages as there always are. PSNH is to blame and has always been to blame. They stopped cutting back branches and trees years ago and look what happens! Do they think NH residents don't remember them coming around every year and doing this in the past? Then we hear they may start charging to do so... PSNH.. Do the jobs your suppose to do and stop taking advantage of NH residents. PSNH hasnt learned one lesson from when this happened last year or the years before. They think they dont have to answer to anyone. PSNH is the one reason alot of people have come to hate their state this time of year!
