YOUNG DESIGNER Siddarth Tytler presented his Spring-Summer collection this past week at New Delhi's Decibel nightclub. Inspired by the Nizams of Hyderabad jewellery, the collection is a judicious mix of comfort and glamour. After a not so encouraging start, it seems he has finally arrived.
"For Delhi summer, comfort is the crucial factor. So I have used a lot of linen. In the last few years the demand for linen has really increased because of the comfort factor, very little wear and tear and most importantly, the fall it imparts to a dress," says Siddarth.
The main grouse of the designers against the fabric has been that it is difficult to work with but Siddarth feels blending has solved this problem. "I have used linen lycra, linen silk, embossed linen and jacquard linen."
Blending jewels
Talk of blending jewels with T-shirts, corsets, skirts and pants might make one a bit uneasy but Siddarth says he has always tried to do something against the trend. The show revealed that he has managed to do it in style. "I have used the jewels sparingly... on the necklines, sides of the pants, on the hemline of tops and the like."

According to Siddarth, skirts remain the flavour of the season and they found ample representation in his collection from A-line to biased-cut and invariably the hemlines remain below knees. He has emphasised pyjamas in a sharp cut akin to the pants. He has matched them with short T-shirts and corsets. "Again with comfort factor in mind. In fact, the young designers have felt encouraged to try new things because customers have accepted changes." He continues, "With women getting more fitness conscious, the cuts are getting sharper. Once voluptuous body was in fashion, today gorgeous body is in demand. It is just the beginning. In future, you will find even sharper cuts."
Best for black
His collection blurs the boundary between prêt and diffusion where a black jewelled linen silk top with burnt velvets is matched with a simple linen skirt or vice versa. "This is deliberate. It gives the customer more options. The top could be worn with jeans as well. You can attend a party or do by making a few adjustments. Black is the predominant colour in my collection because I feel one can carry black in summer nights with ease." Though earthy tones also make a fleeting appearance in his collection, it seems Siddarth reserves his best for black.
Siddarth won't be showcasing his works in the India Fashion Week. "I am already selling in almost all the major Indian centres and New York and New Jersey but FDCI says I should wait for two years before making an entry. This is funny."
