Fashion forecast
SUNIL V. George, up-and-coming fashion designer, says the fashion scene would witness a sea change in the coming months, in colour, fabric and style. "But Kerala will take long to catch up with the latest trends," he says.
Fabrics such as linen, stretch denim, polynosic and tencel are in vogue and a blend of these fabrics would be used more in ensembles. In the casual wear segment, short kurtas for men are in vogue. For women, it is short kurtis teamed up with jeans.
"Mix and match in fabrics can give a funky look to the garment," explains Sunil. Prints such as diagonals and stripes are much sought after by youngsters. Denims can be given a retro look with sand wash, patches and tattered detailing and trimmings. "Prints and embroidery on jeans are fashionable," he says. "Boot cut denims with low waist can be teamed up with T-shirts that are full sleeved and semi-fitting". Skirts this season are either knee-length or ankle-length with a lot of layering. Pleats on skirts are also doing well this season. Bermudas with multi-pockets give the garment an `urban' feel. "Accessories for men such as chains, bracelets, pendants and studs are in," says Sunil.
The style chart for women indicates a shift from accessories with floral motifs to those with geometric patterns -- in earrings and bangles, squares, triangles, hexagons are in, while circles are out of fashion. Knitted headbands in various hues are what women could coordinate with their ensembles for that cool look, while men could don sporty looking bands.
Sunglasses are rimless, double-tinted and large-sized, unlike what was in vogue a few months ago. The sleeves of the choli are getting shorter by the week. Colours such as pink, fuchsia, turquoise, navy blue, aquamarine, and blue-violet and lime are hot favourites. "Save the reds and blacks for the evenings and night outs," Sunil adds.
"In summer 2004, the colours could include white and funky combinations such as a mix of orange and magenta or fuchsia and purple; lots of multi stripes will also be in vogue."
The hemline for the kurtas, in both menswear and women's wear will increase considerably.
