Is batik back this season?

ANUPREET BHALLA

Art and craft get delicately blended to give us the magic of batik design. Teamed with embroidery, the combination just sizzles this season. Are you ready for the magic?

"WHAT IS art and what is craft? That was a hotly debated topic during my years as an art student," says Eloise Piper. After years of having familiarised with batik design, she does not get disturbed by the arbitrary lines of distinction and believes that there is craft in creation of art and art is the making of craft.

This line of distinction becomes ever more blurred by seeing the rich layers and veins of colour in a batik work. Once practised exclusively by the women of Java's royal court, batik hits fashion runways like never before. Batik as surface design takes a leap on the fashion calendar reflecting many a variation.

The resist dye technique of batik sails strong in the knit gallery. Chic styling on ribs and jerseys deserves inspiration from the Bollywood buster Sholay reliving the `Basanti Syndrome'. Complete the look with a dash of lurex embroidery or crystal heat-sets.

`Cracked' Mughal miniatures in batik fancy many designers this summer. With these miniatures as chest prints team up full-circle skirts in chiffon or cotton crepe. Slim, straight fit skirts with lace insertions and panels in batik work take a swift leap on style charts. All over batik wraps hit back with a bang. Batik teamed with embroidery sizzles this season.

Style painters indicate variations of basic shirts for both men and women. Shirts with kimono-like cross over fronts and tie-me-up strings are doing well. Capris and ankle length bottoms create all that oomph!

A variety of motifs sits strong in the fashion gallery. From all-overs to placement concepts, an array of motifs is in. In accordance with forecast services, geometric and floral ideas are in. Chinese dragon, Java's lotus and Indian Garuda also form part of this narration. Conventional motifs are stylised in an abstract frame.

Orthonormal motif concepts showing gradation in size are part of the current style format. Apart from garments, batik hits big in accessories as well. Be it bags, belts, scanners, ties or footwear uppers, batik is reinvented with modern exuberance.

Robert Henri said, "Things are not done beautifully. The beauty is an integral part of their being done." A quote so true of batik design. Whatever be the reason, there is something magical about batik work. Are you ready for the magic?
