Antique yet funky

SHANTI NANISETTI

Though jewellery designing is her passion, Sunita Saincher also deals in designer wear. Her first sale, currently on at her showroom in Amrutha Mall, offers a discount of up to 40 per cent on Indian and Indo-western outfits.

ARE YOU tired of wearing the same old jewellery? Do those pearls, rubies, emeralds and jades fail to enthuse you anymore? If you do not want to invest in new jewellery but want to give your collection a new look, here is the solution.

Sunita Saincher, who runs `Saincher Jewellers' showroom in Amrutha Mall (cellar), redesigns old jewellery retaining the traditional charm and antique look yet giving each piece a modern touch. Having held exhibitions in the country and abroad for about 12 years, Sunita settled down with the showroom five years ago. Jewellery designing (and redesigning) is a passion with her and she loves to work with silver-kundan and pearls. "Crystals, semi-precious stones and beads in combination with silver are in, especially with the college-going crowd. As this jewellery is not expensive (a simple neck piece comes for Rs. 250), youngsters can afford it too. My pricing is actually not very high. I cater to all kinds of customers, with different ranges and combinations to suit every pocket," says Sunita.

Silver-kundan jewellery, where glass is treated to give it a flat diamond look, is her forte. While youngsters go for funky designs in beads, crystals and semi-precious stones, elders prefer precious stones like rubies, diamonds and pearls, done in silver and gold.

Sunita gives a special ethnic-yet-contemporary touch to jewellery. "Instead of wearing just plain pearls, if the string is embellished with silver/ gold, and made into an attractive set, it would give that special new look/ feel. I love pearls in different hues," she says.

Though bright gold polished look is what most people get attracted to, oxidised and copper finishes are slowly picking up. As for NRIs, they ask for oxidised finish for that antique look, she says. "I keep experimenting with new combinations and designs. I also look for odd-shaped and different-looking beads and stones. Gold and emeralds beads sets, gods/ figures etched on amethyst, gold inlay work on stones are a big hit with my customers," she says.

While the beads and semi-precious stones are sourced from Jaipur, Kolkata and Ahmedabad, pearls are from the city.

Apart from dealing in semi-precious, precious and pearls jewellery, Sunita also stocks some designer salwar suits in her showroom. "I used to design salwars initially, but, as per our doctor's advice not to work with dyes and chemicals, I'm now sourcing Indian and Indo-western outfits from different designers in Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi," she says.

Currently, her first exhibition-cum-sale of salwar suits is on till April 20. From cottons, cotton tussars and spun cottons to jutes, crepes, moss crepes, georgettes and voils, the designer wear starts at Rs. 850, excluding a discount of up to 40 per cent on the entire range of garments.

Exclusive cuts, shapes and designs including net embossing, mokash work and arizari work are some specialty outfits. Apart from short kurtas, there are long kurtas teamed with chunnis, priced at Rs. 850 and above, which can be mixed and matched with different salwars. Make hay while the sun shines...
