Understated rooms are a relaxing antidote to busy days on business or the tourist track. Besides an intimate lobby and sophisticated restaurant, elegant touches at this first-class European-style hotel include antique furniture, marble bathrooms and a tiny rooftop pool.
The intricate stone facade of this hotel dates from 1927. The 188 rooms vary tremendously in size, but extra amenities include complimentary newspapers, shoe shines and in-room shower massagers. The small rooftop spa offers a holistic menu of services, and the open-air pool there can be quite romantic at night while Downtown's skyscrapers gleam all around. Downstairs, the Checkers Lounge shakes a mean martini while the adjoining restaurant serves more than respectable California cuisine. Admittedly, Downtown LA isn't to everyone's taste - the area can be sketchy or downright dead after dark - but this historic property is ideal for business travelers seeking a personable alternative to the hulking chain hotels. For leisure travelers, the atmosphere is as romantic as Downtown gets. Beware of high overnight parking charges, though.
