Introducing Coastal Highway 1
Down south it’s called the ‘PCH, ’ or Pacific Coast Highway, but North Coast locals simply call it ‘Highway One.’ However you label it, say hello to the fabulous coast road, which cuts a serpentine course high above the crashing surf. (If you get carsick, pop a motion sickness pill, such as Dramamine.) Stop along the way to comb fog-shrouded beaches, gaze at churning whitecaps and listen for the braying of sea lions on the wind. From December to April, keep your eyes peeled for migrating gray whales; you should be able to spot them from almost any headland.

Coastal accommodations (including campgrounds) fill up from Memorial Day to Labor Day and on autumn weekends, so reservations are essential. Try to visit during spring or autumn, especially September and October when the fog lifts, the ocean sparkles and most other visitors have gone home.
