SCOTTISH beekeepers are on alert after a fatal disease was confirmed at a hive in Stranraer.
American Foul Brood (AFB) devastates honey bees' nests, which scientists believe are vital in maintaining the Earth's ecosystem. A 5km exclusion zone around the area was declared by officials last night.

They insisted there was no risk to public health, but ordered all hives in the area with AFB to be destroyed.

The Scottish Government said: "Bee farmers and beekeepers are being urged to… to notify the local area office of theRural Inspections and Payments Directorate if they suspect AFB."
