Nintendo Profit Slides on Slower Wii Sales

Nintendo on Thursday said in its first-quarter earnings report that sales of its popular Wii motion-sensing game console fell for the first time since its inception three years ago.

The Japanese maker of games consoles said Wii sales for the quarter ended June 30 fell by more than half to 2.23 million units from 5.17 million units in the same period a year ago, bringing the company’s profit down 61 percent to  $445 million (42.3 billion yen) from $1.1 billion (107 billion yen) a year ago.

Revenue fell to $2.7 billion from $4.4 billion a year ago.

“There were fewer blockbuster software titles that briskly drove hardware sales this quarter versus the same period a year ago when titles like 'Mario Kart Wii' and 'Wi Fit' were launched in overseas markets,” the company said.

Nintendo rivals Sony and Microsoft also posted losses in their gaming units this quarter. Last week, Microsoft reported the lowest quarterly sales of its Xbox in two years, and Sony on Thursday posted a $418 million operating loss this quarter, compared with $48 million in profit during the same quarter last year.
