Records indicate John Hogg, the son of Lewis and Margaret Hogg of Frederick County, VA, may have come to South Carolina by 1767 with members of the Lindsey family. Several of his children would have been born in Virginia.

He received a land grant in 1771 for 200 acres first surveyed March 25, 1767, in Berkeley County on a branch of the Enoree River, near King's Creek, in Ninety-Six District. He bought another 150 acres from John Clarke in 1771.

The Hogg cabin was only fifty miles from the villages of the Cherokee, near the Henderson Ferry on the Old Buncombe Rd, a stage coach road which ran from Asheville to Charleston, now called the Broad River Road. John built a large grist mill known as the Hogg Mill nearby on the Enoree River. One source states some mill stones are still embedded in the banks there.  From grant maps, HOGG, John, M7, 165 acres, 1772; 200 acres, 1771. M7 was half Fairfield and half Newberry counties.

John served in the Revolutionary War from 1779 to 1782, first with the militia, then the 5th SC Reg., under Major John Wallace and Col. Bratton. His service record shows he was paid 51 pounds old currency for 102 days of foot service. Two of his young sons served also, son James losing his life, Lewis was injured, and Thomas helped at home by hiding the cattle and grain from the British. Their son Thomas is the father of General Joseph Lewis Hogg who raised a unit
under the captaincy of Frank Taylor known as the Lone Star Defenders from Texas during the Civil War. Gen. Hogg's son was James Stephen Hogg, known as The People's Governor, served as the 19th Governor of Texas.

Lewis Hogg was a French and Indian War veteran.  Born in VA. Lewis died in 1747 in Frederick County, VA.  About 1725 Lewis married Margaret Lindsey?, in VA. Born in VA. Margaret died on 27 May 1751 in Winchester, Frederick County, VA.  They had one child, John Hogg (Revoluntionary War Soldier).
