Butterfly Boucher - Scary Fragile
Pop/Rock - It's been a frustrating few years for Aussie-to-Nashville singer/songwriter Butterfly Boucher, but with some of the usual "major label issues" now out of the way, her long-overdue second album Scary Fragile, released independently in June, is getting the full label rollout September 15 via her new label Nettwerk.
Boucher (pronounced Bow-cher) found some success with the release of her 2003 debut album Flutterby, but her inventive music fell outside of rigid categories, a challenging situation for single minded radio programmers and label marketing execs. Tougher edged and more independent than many of her female counterparts, Boucher found that she wasn't rocking hard enough for some while the more adult stations labeled her songs a little too prickly.
Scary Fragile continues that unpredictability and diversity of style to good effect, serving up confessional piano ballads ("Bitter Song"), discreetly funky rockers ("Gun Like A Tongue") and shuffling pop anthems ("For The Love Of Love") with aplomb. It's easy to see why Boucher is an in-demand musician with her own songs often centered around some tasty and tasteful rhythmic bass lines. Scary Fragile is neither scary or fragile -- it's simply an exquisite and eminently accomplished album that delivers plenty of rewards for those ready for the journey.
