Amy Millan - Masters of the Burial
Pop/Alt/Folk - Canadian indie chanteuse Amy Millan (Stars, Broken Social Scene) follows up her excellent 2006 solo debut Honey From the Tombs with the September 22 release Masters of the Burial (Arts + Crafts), a lovely and understated collection of deceptively gentle, countrified folk/pop. Where Tombs provided an outlet for songs she had written prior to 2000 and her work with Stars, Burial gives us a more modern glimpse at Millan's songwriting prowess along with a couple of choice covers, including an ultra mellow, tangy and twangy version of Death Cab For Cuties' "I Will Follow You Into the Dark." Lyrically disturbing and creepy, the song still oddly enchants with Millan's warm and inviting voice.
Produced by Martin Davis Kinack (Broken Social Scene), Masters of the Burial also lines up some notable featured guests, among them Evan Cranley (Stars), far north folkies Dan and Jenny Whiteley, Feist and Liam O’Neil (The Stills). Says Wears The Trousers, "(Millan) proves yet again that she is magically gifted at creating simple, unfussy melodies that transform into original, rain-spun numbers under her direction." Recommended.
