Murray in mint form to keep title five alive

Defending champion Andy Murray breezed into today's final of the St Petersburg Open with a 6-0 6-3 victory over the Spaniard Fernando Verdasco. The semi-final was a repeat of last year's final, in which the Scot was victorious, and came less than a week after Murray won the Madrid Masters.

Andy Murray remains on course to win a fifth title of the year after overcoming a spirited challenge from Janko Tipsarevic at the St Petersburg Open. Tipsarevic had won two of his three previous matches against Murray – in the first round at Queen's Club in 2006 and then in Moscow last year – and he threatened another upset against the world number four, but Murray dug deep for a 7-6, 7-5 victory to reach the semi-finals.

Robin Soderling needed 20 aces and two tie-breaks to defeat top seed Andy Roddick 7-6, 7-6 and reach the semi-finals of the Lyons ATP tournament yesterday. Soderling, seeded seventh in the indoor event, won both tie-breaks 7-5 to take a tight contest in an hour and 23 minutes.
