500GB PS3 hard drive lands

Japan gets thrid-party beast
PC hardware maker Buffalo is to release two officially licensed 500GB hard drives for PS3.

According to Buffalo, this is the first time Sony has granted licensing to hard drive peripherals.

Andriasang reports that the move that comes in anticipation of March's release of PS3's 'Torne' digital video recorder kit.

Both drives have 500GB capacity and connect to the PS3 via an included USB 2.0 cable.

The 14,800 (approx. £103) Piano Black HD-AV500U2/SC sits horizontally and has a meter on its front showing remaining space.

The 11,800 (approx. £82) Black HD-CL500U2/SC stands vertically but lacks the meter.

Waste of time Sony.
If the HDD is not built-in you can only put video/music and photos on it.
And Ext HDD's for the PS3 need to be formated in FAT32 to work. Sony need to get NTFS drives working on the PS3.
only_777 on 2 Feb '10
Yes NTFS on the ps3 ! DO IT !
stedman on 2 Feb '10
did you even read the article. It's obviously to cater for video information from a new service that's being launched in japan. If you want a bigger HDD for game saves just shove a bigger SATA drive in. Its not exactly difficult.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 2 Feb '10
WHERESMYMONKEY if you even understood what they were talking about, you'd know that Fat32 has a filesize limit, so NTFS is quite important for storing large video files (:
goatmms on 2 Feb '10
Surely nobody should have video files of that size unless they've been ripping/downloading somethings they shouldn't have been??

...like super gay HD 3D porn??

Theres a man who is on the button! Yes, the FAT32 file size limit is 4gig. If you are in the market for 500gig Storage then clearly you are playing around with files that are bigger than that.
only_777 on 2 Feb '10
NTFS is a much better storage format. but you are completely missing the point. This is for a system that will more than likely be giving content in standard def. your average SD film runs in at about 700 mb a time HD between 3.5 and 4.gb.

Unless you are going to start editing video the bitrates that suff is going to be recorded at on it is simply not necessary.

i've already got a 1tb external hard drive that works perfectly with the ps3.
you can get a terabyte for under a hundred quid now.
zelamy on 2 Feb '10
To all the people that want a external hard drive supported by the PS3 almost all of them are compatible.

@ the people that say fat32 has a limit of 4GB you are wrong! You can format in fat32 on windows with a maximum size of 32GB but you can use a file manager and format a entire 1TB if you want

its not rocket science!
Mmmmgrolsch on 2 Feb '10
HFS for the win.

Seriously though, if you are gonna spend £100 on an external 500gb drive then you are a fool. £60 gets you a nice internal £500 2.5" SATA drive which won't be limited by USB 2.0 transfer speeds.
robbo1337 on 2 Feb '10
@Mmmmgrolsch
Yes, but the previous posters are talking about a different 'limit' with FAT32.
You can format the drive to any size you like as you say, but the actual files you save on a FAT32 formatted drive have to be 4GB or under.
It is NOT possible to save a 4GB+ file on a FAT32 formatted drive. PERIOD.

Try it yourself, or google it.
Its not rocket science!

Maybe the films from the PSN video store or crap quality HD from SkyHD.
Transformers 2 Blu-Ray uses 44.6GB for the film alone

Are you even reading the posts? FILE SIZE LIMIT, not HDD limit. Try looking here:

I have no problem backing up my 320gb harddrive onto a external fat32 harddrive, and I have blu-ray films on my external harddrive bigger than 6gb.
