Mass Effect 2 does 2 million

"First blockbuster of 2010," says EA
Mass Effect 2 has "sold-in" over two million units worldwide in less than a week, claims EA, making the BioWare RPG the "first blockbuster of 2010".

The stellar numbers (which are based on "internal EA data") have been achieved despite the sequel only being on sale in North America since Tuesday - and released in Europe just today.

"Mass Effect 2 has earned 40 perfect scores, amassed over 30 editor's choice awards and is donning the front cover of 20 magazines worldwide," said EA.

"On launch day, the term 'Mass Effect' was in the top 10 trending topics on Twitter and most searched on Google News. MSNBC.com said, 'Mass Effect will go down as one of the most influential video game series of all-time on the Xbox 360 platform'."

Dr. Ray Muzyka, BioWare co-founder, added: "Mass Effect 2 is poised to be one of the biggest games of 2010. We could not be more proud of the game's universal acclaim and early commercial success."

That's a lot of willy-waving there. Check out our Mass Effect 2 review, if you haven't already.

I thought ME2 was being overrated, but I was wrong. I had my copy delivered yesterday, and have already racked up about 12 hours :/ And I've been hugely cutting back how much I play games.
It's fantastic, so much smoother and slicker than ME1, combat is almost perfect, voice acting is brilliant pretty much everywhere, loads of cool touches on the new ship.

Bioware deserves this success. They listened to the fans and made a great game.

MAG has stiffer competition in the form of Modern warfare 2, Killzone 2, and Bad Company 2 around the corner. Plus it's a online game only which will turn off even more people. Mass effect 2 has no competition and is a sequel to a very good game.
See the difference?.

I got Mass effect 2 today but can't play it yet. Playing the first game so I can load a save up in the sequel and have my choices from the first game have a impact on the story in Mass effect 2.
GhostAC on 29 Jan '10
Sounds like they've done a good job for this sequel, so it selling well is a good sign. It won't make me go out and buy a 360 (no third time's the charm for me), but I'll let my friends know about it
JuiKuen on 29 Jan '10
I think MAG's failure will be the same thing Sony have done to every major game release on the PS3.... under marketing.

Anyway well done Bioware. I have just got in and started playing and I have to say the start is incredible. Not what I expected at all.

I have been purposely avoiding hearing any story details as well.
bazzatuk on 29 Jan '10
I wish I had never deleted my old Mass Effect save game. Oh well

Definitely worth it IMO. I transferred a level 50 character from "ME1" who was rich, had completed all the resource gathering side-missions and had only 1 Renegade point and a completely filled Paragon metre. I started at level 3, got an additional 100,000 credits on top of the 30,000 you start with, along with 5,000 units of each of the four rare elements (which you will need for research and upgrades in "ME2"Wink and had about 1/8th of my Paragon metre filled already which helps with Paragon persuasion/charm dialogue options. Besides, the game does actually refer to decisions you make in "ME1" via background news announcements and the odd NPC standing around in different parts of "ME2".

sorry everone i was making a point when i said that mag would not sell and i was correctomundo lol f**k you ps3 f***yboy

if he's older 10 than i would be shocked, he really let's down your x-box community, yh i know ps3f***yboy can be as bad to lol.

Anyway, well done to ME2 i'm sure you deserve all the praise you've gotten Smile As for MAG, no-one thought it would be a system seller except SONY. All us ps3 users are really waiting for (well me at least) GOW III, and that probs won't score or sell as well as ME2...but we don't care and neither should you, just enjoy whatever YOUR playing and laugh at the haters.

Peace be with you, all of you...yes even the Wii community Smile

Never played the first game and after about 6 hours of play in the sequel i'm pretty hooked. Graphics are bog standard but its the battle system and story telling thats got me still playing this game. Not 10/10 but 9/10 for me.
Ghostface_K on 30 Jan '10
Too right! Mass Effect 2 is one of best games I have ever played, if not the best. Bioware do it again, hats off to you all and thank you for such a great game.
Oneohfour on 30 Jan '10
A huge improvement on an already good first game. The attention to detail is astounding.Everything about the game screams class.Hats off to bioware!
smegpot on 30 Jan '10
The game looks amazing but being a beat'em up/shooter fan, i really need to know how the action side of this game plays?Anyone care to comment?

The only RPG's i play are the zelda series, as Mass effect has sold so many i'll probably pick it up in the second hand stores!
thelazyone on 30 Jan '10
Could've done with a demo, just isn't my type of game. Just one of those games, the more perfect scores and hype it gets the more disappointed I am when I finally see what all the fuss was about.

The first game was more of an RPG with shooter elements bolted on. Mass Effect 2 is more of a shooter with the RPG elements trimmed down.

It works all the better for it and this game actually does a great job of combining the incredible immersion of the Mass Effect story with a more traditional 3rd person shooter.

I would say you shouldn't worry about action because this game is full of it.

I love it. How do they create such a believable and diverse world to play in that seems so large.
bazzatuk on 30 Jan '10
Yeah, thought the start was very strong and atmospheric. Sound and visuals are top draw. Really not keen on the EAisms though. An EA published title always bears too many hallmarks. Mission end screens are not what I want to see in an RPG.

Shooting is far better but still feels a bit unsatisfying compared to bona fide shooters although the powers are far better implemented. The thermal clip idea is really contrived though.

The interaction with characters can be stilted at times but the voice acting is generally very good.

Overall, yeah good. Glad I rented though as I know it's going to be done in a week and I've never been one for multiple play throughs for something as conversation heavy as this.
ledickolas on 31 Jan '10
I'm pretty impressed by how well it's doing so far.

Has anyone here seen the advert for the game in the UK.. It has to be one of the poorest game adverts I've seen for such a big game. If I didn't know what I already know about the game, I probably wouldn't be that impressed. I personally think they should've used that cinematic trailer that was released in December.. It has such a better impact than that p**s poor one they've used..
ShadowMKII on 31 Jan '10
it deserves every single sale it gets
Maverick135 on 31 Jan '10
i'm 28 hours in and loving it so far.

love the gta reference at the game store on the citadel. (gran terminus assault? class)

i missed out on the leaked dlc though,i couldn't remember the pass to the email account used for live and by the time i had it'd all been taken down.

bugger.

absolutely top quality game though. a huge improvement over the first on just about every level and unusually for a bioware game it runs well.

i installed both discs to the 360 hdd and cleared my system cache,it's ran like a dream.
ste hicky on 31 Jan '10
you're not missing that much really.

Having the Collectors armour at the begining really helps as it keeps yopu alive but once you've gotten into the game proper you can make much better custom armour yourself.

i turned my 360 off while it was in mid auto save by accident and it totally corrupted my save file, 13hrs worth of play down the drain!!!! started it again and am doing every little side mission when they pop up, got my soldier up to level 21 again already, and ive 3/4 filled his renegade meter, ridiculous amount of glowing scars on his face and glowing red devil eyes to boot lol.... got me totally hooked, well done bioware, amazing game and im loving it!!! Well thats a good thing because your money won't be going to Microsoft when you buy Mass Effect it'll be going to EA. The company that publishes it.

that like saying that the company that makes your DVD player will get cash every time you buy a disc for it. not the people who made the disc.
