Daily Track: Jon Brion and Deanna Storey - "Little Person"
Of all the many things that have haunted us about Charlie Kauffman's extraordinarily bizarre film Synechdoche, New York, one of the best comes from "Little Person", one of three songs composed Kauffman with noted producer Jon Brion (Fiona Apple, Dido) -- who also arranged -- and performed by little known jazz vocalist Deanna Storey. Similar in emotional impact and style as "In the Deep", the Bird York track that closed the movie Crash, "Little Person" has that dark, smoky and sensuous vibe that is part wistful lament, part weary contemplation. Storey, whose last album was released in 2002 (with Kauffman liner notes), has recently worked as script supervisor or the Colbert Report. We think she should quit her day job -- or at least get back in the studio w/ Brion.
