Greg Laswell - Covers
Just as we know that singer/songwriter and producer Greg Laswell sounds like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders ("I don't do happy", he reiterates) we also know that he's no stranger to a well-chosen cover song. The San Diego DIY studio wiz's mournful ballad version of Cindy Lauper's classic "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" helped relaunch his career a couple of years back with some prime TV placement and internet buzz. New five track EP, the imaginatively titled Covers, pairs Laswell with a handful of interesting tracks originally recorded by Kate Bush, Echo and the Bunnymen, Morphine, Mazzy Star and Kristin Hersh, whose fine "Your Ghost" gets an imaginative rendering here. "This EP let me stop singing about my own loss and heartache," he says, "I got to channel some other emotions and was able to be objective about the material."
