Pop/Adult - Listening to tracks from her debut album there's simply no getting around the rather obvious fact that British singer/songwriter Laura Groves -- AKA Blue Roses -- has spent a lot of time listening to the music of Kate Bush with a healthy dose of Joni Mitchell and Cocteau Twins thrown in for good measure. Expansive, wispy and lighter than air, Groves captures that fleeting, delicate Bush vocal style with finessed aplomb and, despite the noted similarities, also succeeds in delivering her own special musical vision. Influences may register at the start but by the time you're a couple of tracks in, the focus becomes all about Blue Roses.
The delicate keyboard underpinnings and acoustic guitar flourishes serve as an effective bed to Groves' pixieish, celestial singing, turning songs such as "I Am Leaving" and non-album b-side "Moments Before Sleep" into sumptuous, ethereal works that NME describes as "dizzyingly beautiful." Adds The Sunday Times in the four-star review: “A haunting record, full of unexpected instrumental textures that course beneath Groves’s extraordinary voice and eerie, elusive lyrics”...
