British Sea Power - Man of Aran

Rock - In what is turning out to be one of the most fascinating releases of the year, fine UK rockers British Sea Power have created a brand new soundtrack for a 1934 film Man Of Aran. The critically acclaimed landmark "dramatised documentary" created by American director Robert J. Flaherty is a vivid and visually spectacular black and white testament to the incredible seascape hardships facing the inhabitants on the far flung Irish Aran Islands. Noted critic Pauline Kael has described Man of Aran as "the greatest film tribute to man's struggle against a hostile nature."

As with most scores, the music is mostly instrumental and features a number of new BSP songs, as well as re-recorded / re-worked versions of tracks from their three prior studio albums. Richly textured grand rock passages provide a powerful background to the dramatic scenes of the film with the newly scored DVD of the film included in the 2-disc package arriving June 9. "It’s a film that’s also relevant to the current era" says guitarist Martin Noble, "a time when the idea of living a simpler life is in the air. The film shows something I’d like to think I could do, but know I never will.” Watch of video clip from Man of Aran after the jump.
