Ian McLagan & The Bump Band - Never Say Never
Rock - "One of my favorite bands from that long-ago era was The Faces," say Bill Flanagan, the respected music critic for CBS Sunday Morning, "five rowdy Brits with a sense of fun and a touch of melancholy...Their great songwriter Ronnie Lane passed away years ago. Their guitar player Ronnie Wood went on to join the Rolling Stones; drummer Kenny Jones went to The Who; and their singer Rod Stewart...All those guys did great things, but none of them captured the sound of the Faces until now. Pianist Ian McLagan's Never Say Never mixes mischief and heartache, dancing on the bar and crying in your beer, in perfect proportion."
McLagan has played with The Stones, The Faces, Bob Dylan and Bonnie Raitt's road band but it is his own crack band and wonderful songs that are on full display here. While there is the boisterous barroom (and pub) rock that one would expect given the heritage, there are also some touching songs written for McLagan's late wife Kim who died in a car accident in 2006, most notably the gorgeous and devastating "When the Cryings Over" featuring guest vocals by Patty Griffin. **** by MOJO.
