Marissa Nadler - Little Hells

Pop/Rock/Alt/Folk - To call the music of Boston's Marissa Nadler bleak or melancholic (as many have), is almost to miss the point. With a plaintive, wispy delivery that mixes traditional folk stylings with more eccentric and sharply honed instrumental edge, Nadler's quietly assertive song create dark, dreamy atmospheres that drift by like a cool mist. The imagery may be heartbreak or loss but the serene beauty at the heart of Litte Hells is intensely addictive. "The songs take on different personalities at different points in time," says Nadler. "If a song is good, you should be able to do it in any style and transform it, take a risk and have some fun."

Says Drowned In Sound in a 9/10 review: "In the past it's been all too easy to revel in Marissa Nadler's astonishing voice, roll in the washes of reverb and off key chiming, suck in those eloquently morbid lyrics and be bewitched by the feel of the songs, only without necessarily being walloped by any one individually. Here she’s hacked away the art school whimsy, tossed out the crystals and burned the floaty headscarfs, focussing her talents into ten razor sharp songs, some subtle, some vicious. After years of floating in the ether, Marissa Nadler has finally taken corporeal form. It’s exciting - if a little terrifying - to see what she's going to do with it. "

From her label: "Few contemporary artists can match the stunning ride of Marissa's reverb vocals that are a journey into themselves on every rose tinged track. Little Hells displays a brighter leap in musical maturity and attention to detail, as the fantasmagoric sounds delve into melancholy nuggets, sometimes erotic, sometimes gutting, but filled with a gorgeous sense of serene hope..."
