Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit - S/T
Rock - Born and raised near Muscle Shoals, Jason Isbell's blood courses with the grit and whiskey that define the sound of the South. Best known as a former guitar player for Southern juggernaut Drive-By Truckers, Isbell released his promising if inconsistent solo debut Sirens Of The Ditch after splitting with the band in 2007. Isbell and his new group The 400 Unit toured extensively in support of Sirens, and in the process developed an audible chemistry which they took in the studio for this eponymous LP. The 400 Unit lopes along at an easy pace, never affecting the Lynyrd Skynyrd histrionics of the Truckers but sounding more like Skynyrd's arch rivals Neil Young with a drawl. Ex-Son Volt member Derry deBorga plays electric piano and organ throughout, adding that signature Muscle Shoals shimmer to this quality slab of southern comfort.
