Glasvegas - Glasvegas
Pop/Rock - Glasvegas are riding a wave of buzz that began to take shape in their home town of East Glasgow in 2006, with a string of self-released 7"s that landed them a #2 spot on NME's Singles of The Year list for the hazy elegy "Daddy's Gone" and the starring role in a major label bidding war. Columbia emerged victorious and released the band's eponymous debut in Europe to rave reviews and Album Of The Year honors from NME, swelling the hype to a tidal wave that's breaking on American shores with the album's domestic release and a tour of the states that includes already-sold-out shows in New York and Los Angeles.
All the fuss would, of course, be meaningless if the record did not so fully deserve - some would say demand - it. "Sonically perfect" (NME) thanks to New York meistro Rich Costey, Glasvegas hypnotizes like the finest vintage shoegaze, with lyrically and musically accomplished songs wrapped in thick, warm blankets of guitar feedback and vocal harmonies. It is a cohesive and thoroughly enjoyable album, full to the brim with love, loss, and longing, which undoubtedly deserves the attention it receives.
