Benjy Ferree - Come Back to the Five and Dime...
Pop/Rock - One might expect a concept album about Bobby Driscoll - the doomed child actor who starred in a number of Disney films including Peter Pan, won an Academy Award, was virtually blackballed upon hitting puberty, joined Andy Warhol's Factory and died strung out and homeless at 31 - to be the territory of a high-drama post-cabaret singer, full of heavy handed piano flourishes and weepy ballads. What a pleasant surprise, then, to hear Washington, D.C.'s Benjy Ferree's Domino Records debut, which tells the tragic tale through a series of tough, rootsy rock rave-ups and shouts of "Break out the pixie dust!"
