The Last Shadow Puppets - My Mistakes Were Made For You
It's not easy to dip into the pop production artifacts of the 60's without coming across as either painfully, slummingly unoriginal or simply wallowing in "Austin Powers" wink-wink kitsch. But when it works, new songs can sound like lost classics and the era - and the music produced - can have a whole new appeal to a new generation.
One example of it working to near perfection is the 2008 debut of The Last Shadow Puppets, a kind of Peter and Gordon U.K. duo made up of Alex Turner (of The Arctic Monkeys) and Miles Kane (of The Rascals -- no, not those Rascals). "My Mistakes Were Made For You' sums up what's best about their fine debut The Age of Understatement. Big production (string arrangements featuring the London Symphony Orchestra), twangy, vibrato guitar lines and a melody that sounds like it was made for a Shirley Bassey 007 theme song. The video recently won the NME award for Best Video - so let's revisit:
