Social games developer 6 Waves on Thursday announced it scored a $17.5 million round of venture capital to build up its distribution across Facebook.
Hong Kong-based 6 Waves was formed in 2008 by former Yahoo employees Rex Ng, Chris Lee, and Terry Cheng. The trio began developing social applications and casual games for Facebook and now claims 6 Waves the largest distributor of social games with 50 million monthly users.
“Social games have expanded rapidly, fueled by the strong growth of social networks,” 6 Waves CEO Ng said in a statement.
New York-based Insight Venture Capital pumped the $17.5 million stake into 6 Waves for the company to boost its distribution infrastructure and expand.
“We support 6 Waves’ vision to connect people through games and provide a fun, interesting, and energizing environment for consumers.” said Jeff Horing, managing director at Insight Venture Partners, in a statement.
The startup counts over 20 games in its collection, but it plans to build up as a publisher and distributor of games for developers as well as expand internationally with the funding.
