Susan Dickenson

After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill (BS-Business Admin., 1982), Susan Pyle Dickenson spent 15 years in the Wash., D.C. area, writing and researching for trade associations, lobbyists, a Dept. of Commerce project and Perot Systems, H. Ross Perot's post-EDS venture. After relocating to her native High Point several year ago, she continued a career as a freelancer, writing general interest, business, garden and home items for several publications. Social networking for retailers - good and bad examples, and as competitive intelligence

More than half of retailers are using social media in their marketing efforts this season, according to a new BDO Seidman survey. Seventy-six percent (76%) of those retailers are using Facebook, 50% are on Twitter, 14% are on MySpace and 14% are on YouTube. For more info, read Natalie Zmuda and Kunur Patel's story in AdAge. And how do you feel heading into 2010?

The most successful operational thing we added this year was our loyalty program, "Simplicity Rewards." Basically, at the end of the year, we give customers a store gift certificate equal to 10% of what they spent during the year. Those who already enjoyed visiting our store come back more often since they feel they're getting something back. Almost 1,000 people have signed up so far, and the best part is we now have birthday, e-mail, telephone and mailing address information that we're using to keep in closer contact with our customers. We also do an annual giving project, donating 10% of holiday sales, over seven weeks, to a local charity. The San Gines Ceramics Company unveiled this week, for the first time, the work done to date on what is being called “the largest ceramic tile mural in the world.” San Gines, one of the newer incarnations of a ceramics tradition that, for generations, has produced crockery, tableware, architectural ornamentation and decorative accessories in central Spain, was commissioned by the Government of Algeria to produce the mural for the exterior of a new convention center in the city of Oran.

Liquidation sales start at eight Old Time Pottery locations Thursday

Old Time Pottery’s Holden Road location here in Greensboro is among the discount retailer’s eight store locations that are closing under the company’s reorganization plan following its August bankruptcy filing. The sale begins Thursday, Dec. 3 and will be managed by Hudson Capital Partners, LLC. Old Time Pottery’s other 29 locations will remain open and operate as usual.

 

In a sale that is expected to last about eight weeks, $15.5 million in inventory will be liquidated, including glassware, dinnerware, framed art, linens, rugs, craft supplies, seasonal decorations, mirrors, wall décor, lamps, candles, silk plants and home accents.
