Real Time Strategy RTS Games

Strategy games offer a wide variety of fun and exciting ways for players to test their ability to outthink and outmaneuver their opponent on the way to victory. In broad terms, strategy video games typically fall into two categories—turn-based and real-time. Turn-based strategy games consist of a series of distinct moves, much like in a chess match, in which there are definite starts and stops with each move. Real-time strategy games (also known as RTS games) are games in which the action plays out on an ongoing basis as the player implements tactics and strategies for success.

In the broadest sense, you could say there’s an element of strategy in just about every game. In the world of video games, however, strategy games specifically refer to a genre of games that test your intellect against the computer (in single-player games) or your live opponent(s) in head-to-head or multiplayer action. Strategy games can now be found on every video game platform, from handheld devices with simple turn-based games to the most robust PCs capable of playing complex online strategy games with many players vying for supremacy.

Electronic Arts produces the Command & Conquer franchise, one of the most famous, bestselling, and critically-acclaimed strategy game franchises of all time. EA also produces The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth, an epic RTS game set in the world of the blockbuster movie trilogy and beloved fiction by J.R.R. Tolkien. In these games, players start with a minimum amount of resources, technology, weapons, etc. and must build a society from the ground up. As they develop a civilization, the player must ensure the defense of their city while at the same time gauging the proper time for bargaining with allies or attacking their enemies.

EA recently announced the release date for BattleForge, an epic online strategy game being developed by the company’s Phenomic Studio. BattleForge combines the pace of an RTS game with the customization of trading cards in an online environment where friends can play together.
