GEOLOGIC BACKGROUND:
The Davis and Black Rock Vents include three small Holocene cinder
cones and their lava flows. The alignment, composition similarities,
and visual similarities indicate that they all probably erupted
during the same eruptive period.
- The northern most vent erupted the flows which blocked Odell
Creek to form Davis Lake.
- There is an age date about 5,500 yrs (C14 age of 4,740 yrs)
on the middle flow which comes from an unnamed cinder cone that
has been mined for cinder aggregate material. The mining has exposed
the core of the cone.
- The southern flow comes from Black Rock Butte. There is a flat
lava floored crater in Black Rock Butte, and there is a small
pit crater on the crater floor.
