Name That Decade!
By Virginia Prescott on Thursday, December 24, 2009.
Depending on who you ask, the first decade of the 21st century ends next week – or ends December 31, 2010. It seems like there’s a popular desire to just have it over with. So we’re going with the zeitgeist –and calling next Thursday the end. Before we give these years a farewell, we have to give them a name. Last week, we asked listeners and our Public Insight Network for ideas on how to name the first decade of the 21st century. We tossed around a few ideas: the post-truth decade, the fraughts, the disaster decades, the “naughty aughties”, the zeros, the broadband decade, the oh-nos, or the uh-ohs... nothing quite as catchy as the roaring '20s or swinging '60s. So now, our review of your totally unscientific, self-selecting, practically random submissions for what Word of Mouth listeners would call this decade. Brady Carlson, NHPR's new media man and never one to miss a catchphrase, is with us. (Photo courtesy Dier via Flickr/Creative Commons) About usWord of Mouth is all about what's new. Online and on-air, the show looks at our fascinating and ever-changing world, and puts the latest ideas under a microscope. Word of Mouth investigates everything from science and technology, to health and the environment, to new trends in popular culture. The show airs Monday through Thursday at noon and is hosted by Virginia Prescott. Contact usSay what you want to say. How you want to say it. We want to hear from you. People seem to be using the same expression they used 100 years ago: "The Oughties". Another popular expression is the "Oh Oh's".
At least TIME Magazine has referenced the Unies.

Clearly, the majority of your listener comments supported "Naughty Aughties" as the nomenclature for the current decade. It is time for you to embrace it.
Many folks attempt to reflect on what the decade for the years 1900-1909 was called. Mass marketing, thanks to radio, was not created until the mid 1920s, so it wasn't as pressing a need as it is today. NUMERICALLY & MNEMONICALLY, there is only a small range of choices: Naughties, Aughties, Naughts, Aughts and Naughty Aughties.
