GEOLOGIC BACKGROUND:

Lava Mountain is a large basalt shield capped by multiple cinder cones. This broad, shallow cone covers an area 10 to 11 km in diameter east of the Devils Garden lava field. The lava field contains both rough, clinkery aa lava and smooth ropy pahoehoe lava.
