Here's What's Awesome: Music from Images, Solar Irrigation in Africa

By Brady Carlson on Sunday, January 10, 2010.

The holidays are behind us, presents have been wrapped, resolutions have been made (and, just as often, dropped!), and yet, through it all, the weekly inculcation of awesome links we call Here's What's Awesome endures! Time to celebrate!

See the music all over again
RGBMusicLab is a new freeware program that generates sound based on the pixel information of the image you submit. This isn't Microsoft Songsmith, so the tunes can be more experimental than poppy, but it can be a lot of fun to toss a picture of your favorite singer and hear what melodies spring forth. Sunshine on my irrigation pump makes me happy
In places called "food insecure regions," residents have to make the most of limited resources to grow or buy food. A project going on in Benin has figured out a way to really make the most of those resources: solar-powered water pumps irrigate crops (typically locals have to bring the water in by hand - if the crops are irrigated at all). Researchers from Stanford said that while there's a substantial setup cost to install the pumps, the payoff is even more substantial - as much as a fivefold increase in the amount of vegetables residents eat. For those of us who feel like we know more about our neighbors from Facebook than old-time chats by the fence, BlockChalk, a virtual bulletin board for people to post notes to the neighborhood. It's more or less Twitter with a geolocator, to pinpoint posts to your current locale. And it's anonymous, so the next time you hear those darned neighbors making too much noise, you can tell them off the passive-aggressive way, without burning any bridges. [ReadWriteWeb]

Now it's your turn: share an awesome link by posting in the comments. Your neighbors will certainly have something to say about it if you don't.
