Hope Sandoval + The Warm Inventions - Through the Devil Softly
Pop/Rock/Folk - As the voice of 90's dream pop pioneers Mazzy Star, Hope Sandoval helped create the mellow, psychedelic/folk style that has continued to influence a generation of bands looking for that special "pre-caffeinated" somnambulant vocal quality. Singing in a voice that is almost whispered pillow talk set to music, Sandoval turned songs such as the unlikely hit "Fade Into You" into a genre where "plaintive" and "languid" were the prized buzzwords. It was, in a way, the hippest "soft rock" imaginable and Sandoval became the west coast Nico to those making valium the drug of choice -- but it was also, thankfully, exceptionally beautiful music in its own narcoleptic way.
Sandoval returns with Through the Devil Softly (Nettwerk), the second full-length project with her band The Warm Inventions (featuring Colm O'Ciosoig formerly of My Bloody Valentine). Rolling Stone reports that the album was recorded over the last couple of years in California and Ireland and described the project as "a lovely, 11-track collection of narcotic, folk tunes centered by Sandoval’s breathy, irresistible seductive croon."
