This section offers information about funding opportunities related to leadership development.

Ongoing Sources of Funding

Annual Fellowships for Environmental Leaders
The Environmental Leadership Program supports a diverse network of visionary, action-oriented emerging leaders through various training programs. Each year ELP's Fellowship Program provides training and project support to 20–25 talented and diverse individuals from nonprofit organizations, business, government, and higher education. This fellowship offers unique networking opportunities, intensive leadership and skills training, the opportunity to meet established environmental practitioners and experts in the field, and time for personal and professional reflection. The deadline for applications is October 1, annually.

The Ben & Jerry's Foundation: Funding for Grassroots Social Change
The Ben & Jerry's Foundation provides support to nonprofit, grassroots organizations that facilitate progressive social change. The foundation will only consider proposals from grassroots, constituent-led organizations whose projects are examples of creative problem solving. Types of grants include those that facilitate leadership development and strengthen the self-empowerment efforts of those who have traditionally been disenfranchised in our society. Grants range from $1,000 to $15,000 and letters of interest can be submitted at any time.

Grants Available for Human Needs Services
Applications are being accepted for the Public Welfare Foundation's grants to support organizations that provide services to disadvantaged people. Areas of interest include health, the environment, disadvantaged elderly and youth, community and economic development, and human rights and global security. The foundation provides both general support and project-specific grants to organizations throughout the United States. There are no deadlines for grant applications, as grants are offered throughout the year.

Hazen Foundation
The Hazen Foundation's grantmaking priorities focus on public school reform and youth leadership development. Applications in the area of public education should center on community and parent organizing initiatives that foster educational equity and improved student achievement; and in order to enhance the development of a new generation of grassroots leaders, programs "should focus on youth organizing and leadership development initiatives that help middle- and high-school-age youth develop the interest and skills necessary to become involved in meaningful social change efforts."

The site's FAQ page has detailed information about the foundation's grant making programs and application procedure. Items include: the foundation's current program interests, the types of organizations the foundation funds, the types of grants the foundation awards, funding areas the foundation does not support, and more.

Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation
The Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation's grants program has three main pillars: developing grassroots leaders in low-wealth communities; building the capacity of nonprofit organizations to improve themselves and their communities; and supporting community coalitions that work across race and class lines to achieve tangible improvements. The foundation serves Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Its site provides grant and application information.

Mix It Up Grants Aimed at Youth-Directed Community Activism
The Mix It Up Grants Program currently funds youth-directed activist projects that challenge social boundaries in communities and schools. Applicants that promote the ideals of youth leadership while collaborating across social boundaries will be considered. There are no application deadlines. UPS Foundation Supports Literacy, Hunger, and Volunteer Management
By making grants and contributing other resources, like volunteers, technical assistance and expertise, the foundation enables not-for-profit organizations to serve communities more effectively. Since 1998, The Foundation has contributed nearly $10 million to efforts that enable not-for-profit organizations to improve the recruitment, training and retention of volunteers. In addition, Foundation grants have broadened the effectiveness of social service delivery to a range of populations in need, especially youth. Visit the UPS Foundation for more information.
