The Duke and the King - Nothing Gold Can Stay
Rock/Blues/Country - Described by one critic as a "lush mix of dreamy Topanga ballads, country soul and gospel", the debut album from The Duke and The King -- AKA errant Felice Brother Simone Felice with Robert "Chicken" Burke -- Nothing Gold Can Stay is a decidedly low-keyed but invigorating, self-described "soundtrack to a fateful winter."
In the midst of writing and recording tracks with Burke and planning for the birth of his daughter, Felice was devastated by the sudden miscarriage of his expected child. "In the process of mourning it helped a lot to turn some of the sorrow and revelation into songs", he relects, and that deeply personal stamp is engrained deep into Nothing Gold. Songs such as "If You Ever Get Famous" and "Still Remember Love" shimmer have a loose, pop/folk shamble to them, Felice's wavering tenor adding a touch of thoughtful melancholy around the edges. This is simply timeless music, lovingly created and imaginatively performed. Recommended.
