We pick the brains of horror's biggest names

Panzer 88: Writer/Director Peter Briggs
" Yes. "Panzer 88" is, at the end of the day, a supernatural horror/action movie set during World War 2. Specifically, it takes place in October 1944. And when we locked down that particular date, which we had to do for logistical reasons within the script, and also to ensure that a lot of the military hardware we referenced within the story was actually deployed in the field at the time..."

The Wolfman: Director Joe Johnston
"Well, you normally get 16 or 18 weeks or something like that for prep. It’s not the ideal way to do it, of course, but the one big advantage it had was that I had to rely completely on instinct. And I had to just trust that, and say to myself, “what do I think this should be?” I don’t have time to sit analyze it, and review, and write a new scene, and have the writers come in."
By: Chris Eggertsen

The Dead: Co-Director Howard Ford
"The reality is it's a strange mix of many of the classic zombie movies; Romero's dead trilogy ('Night,' 'Dawn' & 'Day') and Lucio Fulci's 'Zombie Flesh Eater's'. We even have a soft spot for Bruno Mattei's 'Zombie Creeping Flesh'! This mixed with a neo realist style of film making has given us something totally unique . We did a test screening recently and some said it's 'Dawn of the Dead' meets hotel Rwanda'!"
By: MrDisgusting

President's Day: Chris LaMartina & Nicolette LeFaye
" Holiday slasher films hold a special place in my heart, from the more mainstream films down to things like "April's Fools Day." If you name a movie after a holiday, I'm there! For some reason I just have to check it out."
By: Josh Slates

Stripped: John Wildman & Justina Walford
"I am so desensitized to violence, I have no idea. People always cringe at what I find to be “kind of” violent and then I cringe at a stubbed toe scene. To liberally paraphrase Stephen King: Terror is the top goal. Horror is second best. If those cannot be done, we are fine just grossing you out."
By: MrDisgusting

Triangle: Writer/Director Christopher Smith
"The whole film was shot on/or next to the ocean. The toughest thing was dealing with the fear that something would go wrong, rather than something actually going wrong."
By: MrDisgusting

Buried: Director Rodrigo Cortes at Sundance
"It certainly was not a party. Ryan went back to Los Angeles a physical wreck; no doubt he had to justify to US customs officials why sand trickled to the floor whenever he blinked."
By: MrDisgusting

Splice: Director Vincenzo Natali at Sundance
"I really started with the idea that it would be interesting to have a creature film that was spliced with a relationship story. Actually, I didn't start off trying to make a “family” movie (laughs), or a story about a family. It just naturally evolved that way."
By: Chris Eggertsen

DOLOR 'Lila': Author Rick Florino
"Dolor means "pain" in Latin. That's the actual definition of the word itself. So, just think of all the insanity that can take place in a town whose very nomenclature evokes "pain!" [Laughs] The name is really important, because it instantly sets the series up as something dark and thought-provoking."""
By: BC

The Violent Kind: The Butcher Brothers
"A whole lot of beer, fucked up stories, and the want to make a different kind of film. We really wanted to get back to our roots of indie filmmaking, and the unbelievable team of producers we’re working with on THE VIOLENT KIND allowed us to follow our vision with this film, from script to screen. And by doing that, we got an invitation to premiere at Sundance."
By: MrDisgusting

YellowBrickRoad: Directors Jesse Holland and Andy Mitton
"It's a blend of a psychological horror and a suspense thriller - so maybe we have a "psycho-thriller?" With a dab of the classic gothic ghost story and a dab a slasher. Clearly, it's less of any specific horror breed and more of a horror mutt. But it's certainly built to freak you out, we'll see how we do."
By: MrDisgusting

Amer: Directors Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani
"Amer is an enigma and only the spectator has the key... but we can explain you a little bit more how it is constructed. There are 3 little stories for each age of Ana (child, teenager and adult) which depict her discovery and quest of desire and sexuality. So it's a trip in Ana's tortured erotic universe."
By: MrDisgusting

Sundance '10: Tucker and Dale vs. Evil Director Eli Craig
"If the movie does well at all, I actually hope to cut about a 20 minute short film entirely from the college kids POV, that’s straight horror and add it to the DVD. It would be fun to show Rashomon stlye how perception is everything."
By: MrDisgusting

30 Days of Night - Dark Days: Writer Steve Niles
"In Dark Days, you just catch up with “new” Stella and her group of vampire hunters, and I don't think I gave them a beat of back-story. For the film you got to really flesh them out, make them interesting characters that the audience would care about."
By: E.L. Katz

Horror's Hallowed Grounds: A Clockwork Orange
"Based on the brilliant 1962 novel by Anthony Burgess, director Stanly Kubrick set out to create his own vision of the Burgess novel. Released in 1971 Stanly Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange turned the world on its ear. To this very day the film sparks controversy and continues to influence all kinds of artists from film to art to music and so on."
By: Sean Clark

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day: Director Troy Duffy
"I probably went through seven to ten drafts of this movie. What I found was writing a sequel was like writing with cement shoes on and one hand tied behind your back. Because Boondock fans had deemed that first film sacred ground, you’re not free to just sit down and write what you want. Just imagine everything that you wrote had to correlate to the piece you wrote before. It becomes like cracking a code. You cannot tread on the sacred ground of the first film."
By: Mike Pereira

The Descent: Part 2: Director Jon Harris
"There are one or two places where I went to the edge to push what people might be expecting and it’s always exciting to see how these moments go down. Fortunately at Frightfest I counted at least four or five spontaneous bursts of applause. I tried to make the film as fun and scary a ride as I could."
By: Jeff Otto

The Box: Writer/Director Richard Kelly
"Exactly, they’d be Googling everything, doing Internet searches and they’d be in front of their laptop for half the movie, you know? (Laughs) They wouldn’t go to the library, no one goes to the library anymore, [people just surf] a bunch of websites. That’s not fun storytelling, you know? "
By: Chris Eggertsen

The Possession of David O’Reilly: Director Andrew Cull
"Police were called to a block of converted Victorian apartments, and what they found inside one of them was puzzling and disturbing. There were no signs of a break in, or reason to suspect drugs or other foul play and police attributed the events to a domestic dispute or love rivalry gone wrong. A diary was found full of strange ideas and drawings."
By: MrDisgusting

My Super Psycho Sweet 16: Director Jacob Gentry
"Well you know going in you’re not making IRREVERSIBLE or MARTYRS or ICHI THE KILLER, but you just go as far as the story and the slasher genre demands and let them pull you back if need be. I think some of the most influential slasher films could play fairly unedited on basic cable."
By: MrDisgusting

Antichrist: Writer/Director Lars von Trier
"You know, writing is something you can do while laying in bed for a long time and be depressed and still get up and write for half an hour. But when you shoot, you have to be there all the time so shooting was the worst part of it. I wrote about 10 pages a days for a month or two. Early in my career, I thought for a long time and then wrote the script in a week. But, that didn't happen this time.""
By: David Harley

Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3D: Director Zeb de Soto
"Zombies have always been an obsession of mine. Night of the Living Dead Origins has been quietly gestating in the Reese's pieces of my candy coated zombie obsessed mind for quite some time. And as a true fan boy of the genre, I've felt that it was necessary to go and make the most kick ass zombie film every f**king created."
By: MrDisgusting

Necromentia: Director Pearry Reginald Teo
"Director Pearry Reginald Teo made an impact in Hollywood with his first feature length film, the cyberpunk The Gene Generation starring Bai Ling and now he’s back with his latest, the dark and disturbing Necromentia. A while back I caught the trailer for the film and it had such an impact I immediately wrote about it, I hadn’t seen something so hellish since Clive Barker’s original Hellraiser movie."
By: Phil Wheat

The Loved Ones: Director Sean Byrne
"I was searching for a low budget horror idea and woke up one morning thinking what if I fused Carrie and Evil Dead, bringing the Prom to the cabin and making its very traditions – the decorations, the dress up, the dancing and, of course, the crowning of the King and Queen – the instruments of torture."
By: MrDisgusting

Birdemic: Star Whitney Moore
"You know, all the major decisions that were made in the movie, I’ll say- we didn’t have any control over anything. If we asked a question about any of the major plot twists - for example, why are the eagles exploding, or why do we have M16s, or why are these people getting acid dumped on them? The answer to all these questions would be, because it’s a movie. And it would be left at that. And we would sort of not ask any more questions, because you wouldn’t get any more answers."
By: Simon Barrett

New Terminal Hotel: Writer/Director B.C. Furtney
"Enough to keep the nasty spots nasty. Big thanks to Jerry Gergely and Chris & Sabrina from Tom Savini's Makeup FX Program in Monessen PA, for coming in and kicking ass for us where it was needed. But y'know, the film's really driven by its characters. They're real."
By: MrDisgusting

Zombieland: Excl Interview with Director Ruben Fleischer
"I guess the thing that I had to get comfortable with was just splatter and gore because that’s where my taste lies, but I know that zombie audiences are not afraid of some blood. So in studying horror movies, I just realized that, even though it’s not what I love, I’ve gotta go big with the blood. Movies that maybe informed that were Peter Jackson’s DEAD ALIVE, which might be the bloodiest movie I’ve ever seen. Mowing down people with a lawn mower and putting a baby in a blender..."
By: Jeff Otto

Human Centipede: The First Sequence Star Ashlynn Yennie
"I read the synopsis of the film and then had the option to stay and audition or leave. Me being the curious creature I am had to find out what this was all about! I talked Ilona’s ear off for about 20 mins asking her every question imaginable. I kept saying 'how are you going to make the “centipede” really attached?" "
By: MrDisgusting

The 69 Eyes: Lead Singer Jyrki 69 Talks 'Back in Blood'!
"Goth probably comes from my deep vocals but I'm just trying to sound like Elvis, hahah... We've always been trying to mix Goth and Glam sound somehow together - you know like we're as much influenced by Danzig as L.A.Guns in a way. When we're playing live, we're rocking much harder than on the albums and that's something that Matt wanted to bring into this album..."
By: MrDisgusting

Zombieland : Exclusive Chat with star Jesse Eisenberg
"I had to audition for the movie several times and then my final audition was with Woody. I think they were trying to cast it with someone who had chemistry with him. We did a lot of improvisation and some of that made it in the movie. When you’re doing a lot of improvisation, it forces you to step into your character in a really fun way."
