Various - Songs from The Point
Pop/Rock - In 1971, noted singer and songwriter Harry Nilsson - named by John Lennon and Paul McCartney at the time as their "favorite" American performer - embarked on the creation of The Point, a magical project of pop whimsy that married bright, breezy songs to the animated TV film of boy discovering the joys and pains of nonconformity. Led by the hit single "Me and My Arrow", The Point has shown staying power as a brilliant multi-media effort and simply a great collection of songs from one of the era's best and smartest pop practitioners. Peaking on the album charts at #25, the album helped lead in Nilsson's most successful period with the classic Schmilsson album and the hits "Jump Into the Fire", "Coconut" and "Without You", a version of a song by Badfinger that was a #1 hit.
This new updated remake is short in length (just eight songs) but long on talent and features, among others, the contributions of Andrew Bird ("Think About Your Troubles"), Martha Wainwright ("P.O.V. Waltz"), Dawn Landes ("Life Line"), indie popsters Nada Surf ("Me and My Arrow") and Gypsy-cowboys Devotchka ("Everything's Got 'Em"). The artists all came together on the album to benefit "826NYC", a nonprofit group that provides creative-writing workshops and tutoring to kids aged 6 - 18.
