RUN IT BACK: 2009 YEAR IN REVIEW

2009 was an amazing year to be a fan of fighting games! As the new year approaches, let's take a moment to reflect on just how good this year was to us!  Now, before we get hate mail for forgetting something, we can't mention every person or event in this article. If we did, it would be the size of a novel.  If you want to give shout-outs to people or events you thing deserve recognition, feel free to do so in the comments!

       THE GAMES

      Street Fighter 4

Nobody can deny the influence this game had on the fighting game genre.  The fighting game market was on life support before Street Fighter 4 came along, with only the largest franchises daring to take a shot at releasing a home version. Capcom itself, one of the kings of fighting game developers, even considered releasing a new Street Fighter a risk, and one which producer Yoshoniri Ono had to overcome before the game got the green light.  We are so glad they did.

This game is a model for how to bring back a classic franchise.  They did it not just for the hardcore fans who were still playing Third Strike, but to pull in a new generation of fans.  The game contains a truckload of nostalgia for gamers who love the series but at the same time designed the game so that anybody could play and have fun.  This game was a home run for Capcom and, despite what you personally think of the game, it was exactly what the fighting game genre needed.

Street Fighter: The Complete History Coming in 2010

It's about time someone does this! IGN's Chris Carle is writing a book chronicling the history of Street Fighter called, appropriately, "Street Fighter: The Complete History".  It will be published by Chronicle Books in late March, 2010 and have 176 pages.

You can pre-order the book from Amazon here.

Here's the Amazon description of the book:

Street Fighter took the video gaming world by storm in the mid-1980s; more than 127 million copies and hundreds of imitators later, the series continues to be one of the most beloved and successful video game franchises of all time.

In this official history, legendary game developer Capcom opens its vault to tell the complete story of Street Fighter. Original text and interviews with the developers and animators present the franchise’s impact on gaming culture, while more than 200 pieces of artwork reveal the care that went into designing the button-mashing classic. Featuring a slick flexi cover, this collection will be indispensable to the millions of ardent fans worldwide.

Thanks to Valkyrie for the tip!

Guilty Gear Director: "I Fully Intend to Create a Guilty Gear for the PS3 and 360". No Crossover Plans with BlazBlue

At a recent visit to NowGamer, Arc System Works' Business Development Director Tomo Ohno responded to a question about the possibility of a Capcom Vs series style crossover for the company's 2D fighting franchises BlazBlue and Guilty Gear.

“Personally I don’t like that idea,” Ohno replied. “What we can say about Guilty Gear is that it is not dead yet. It has not ended. The producer/creator of Guilty Gear, Daisuke Ishiwatari, his comment for this meeting [was] ‘I have the full intention to create Guilty Gear for PS3 and 360.’

Ohno didn't totally dismiss the chances of a crossover between Guilty Gear and BlazBlue in the future. “It’s a different world – it’s not BlazBlue taking over Guilty Gear, but Guilty Gear is an important thing for us and we want to make sure fans of Guilty Gear continue to have fun in that world."

"BlazBlue is a new thing, and there might be some crossover but at the moment we don’t have any plans.”

IPW Forum Poll: Street Fighter III: Third Strike HD, Do Want?

I remember last year vividly.  Street Fighter 4's release was looming in March.  In a brilliant move ,intentional or coincidental, Capcom released Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix just a few months before.  The release of HD Remix at that time partially fulfilled my hunger for Street Fighter 4 and yet also helping to build my enthusiasm for it.

Fast forward to 2010.  Super Street Fighter 4 is on the horizon for Spring.  In my opinion, Capcom could do the same thing again only with far less effort and money/resources.  Street Fighter 3: Third Strike would be a perfect game to re-release to keep the Street Fighter franchise hot as a kettle until Super arrives.

How to update Third Strike for HD

There will be people out there who will ask for Capcom to completely redraw the sprites in HD like they did with Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix.  That is not practical or necessary.  First of all, Third Strike has many times more frames of animation than SF2 Turbo.  It would take 2-3 times as much time and resources.

The practical solution is to do something similar to what they did with Marvel vs Capcom 2.  Third Strike is still a good looking game even after all these years.  If they just added the graphics filters from Marvel vs Capcom 2, reworked the onscreen lifebars and indicators as well as some of the select and summary screens, and added the GGPO-powered online components of Marvel vs Capcom 2 it would be a great title.

      But Would You Buy It?

If Capcom gave Third Strike a re-release as stated above, for Marvel vs Capcom 2's price ($15), would you buy it?

Vote today in our IPW Forum Poll here.

Who knows, if enough people vote yes maybe Capcom will take notice (we know some Capcom staffers visit this site).  If the no's are loud and clear, the Third Strike fans will know that the game no longer has the support they think it does.

What Would It Look Like? See These Mock-ups!

If you want to get an idea of what the game would look like, check out these mock-ups done by Mr List at the Capcom Unity Forums.  These were done a few months ago and look amazing. If one person can do this, surely Capcom can do it!

Super Street Fighter 4 Las Vegas Fight Club

Capcom has announced the second Fight Club event for Super Street Fighter 4. This time it will be held in Las Vegas for CES, bringing in the new year with a bang!

Like the last Fight Club in New York, this event will give players a chance to get their hands on the new characters.  This time, in addition to Juri, Dee Jay, and T.Hawk, the game will also have Guy, Cody, and Adon playable!

Where:  Las Vegas, in our suite in Planet Hollywood.

When:  Thursday, January 7th, from 7-10pm.

How:  Send THIS GUY a note explaining why we should pick you.  If you get in, you can also bring 1 guest--everyone must be 18+ with ID to get in!

It'll be the invincible Team Unity vs rag-tag band Major Nelson can pull together, and Capcom may also hold a friendly little tournament.  There will be prizes for all, but the tournament would have a special format that nets you bonus points for winning with the new characters.

Space is limited for this event, so once capacity is reached you will not be able to get in.  You will need an invitation to this event and if you don't get one, it's because they are full.

If you get in, we'll respond to let you know the room number--because capacity in the suite is limited, if you don't get a reply, don't plan on just showing up, because we won't be able to get you in.  The hotel almost shut us down last year, so we'll get as many as we can through the door, but you'll need an invitation!

The last Fight Club only allowed a few people to actually play the game, instead letting people play Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Marvel vs Capcom 2 and watching Super Street Fighter 4.  This time more people will actually get to play from the sounds of it, so hopefully some pro players can get in there and give us detailed impressions.

High Quality Blazblue: Continuum Shift Videos at Arcade Infinity

Wow! This is the first time I've seen vids of the arcade version of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift in this kind of quality!  It's pretty amazing looking, as you would think.  Head over to Arcade Infinity to check out more vids. Over the week (as I look at them all myself) maybe I'll cherry pick some good ones to post on this site through the week if things are slow.

Capcom replies to questions about Third Strike re-release and Avatar items/unlocks for Super Street Fighter 4

Capcom's Christian Svensson answered some questions on the Ask Capcom Forum at Capcom Unity.  One question was about the potential for a re-release of Street Fighter 3: Third Strike for current consoles.  Another question was about Avatar items/unlocks for Super Street Fighter 4. Here are the questions and replies:

      Question:

How would i get ahold of Yoshinori Ono to ask him, beg him, shine his shoes for life, for a arcade perfect, downloadable version of 3rd strike for the Playstation 3 and xbox 360.

This is very important to me, as well as other players across the world, alot of people don't know or realize that there are 3 games that carried the street fighter franchise. Super Turbo, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike.

Two of the three afore mentioned titles have had HD make overs, i'm not even asking for that, i just want a arcade perfect port don't need to waste time making new graphics just make sure that everything is the same hit boxes frame data and the game runs at a smooth 60fps.

      Sven:

It's not up to Ono-san so you'd be asking the wrong person.

The Capcom USA board would make that decision and such a project is more likely to be championed in our office rather than Japan given recent history (the two other projects you mentioned were championed by me specifically and produced in our our office).

Unfortunately, there's nothing new to discuss on that front at the moment.

      Question:

Since Street Fighter IV didn't release any Xbox Live Avatar Items or etc, is there any plans for Super Street Fighter IV to have Avatar Items/ Awards / Rewards?

      Sven:

We've got some surprises in store with regard to SF avatar gear. Stay tuned.
