A report has appeared in the Japanese press which says Sony is working on a multi-core design for PlayStation 4.
The Japanese website PC Watch reckons that Sony is looking at alternatives to the PS3's Cell architecture, which would hopefully make PS4 easier to develop for.
According to the site (via Kotaku), an early alternative was said to include Intel's Larrabee but that was a non-starter. The firm was also said to be looking at a modified version of the Synergistic Processor Unit. All that's out the window though and Sony is now supposedly working on multi-core designs.
PC Watch also reports that a new handheld will be released before a new home console, which translates to PSP2 going on sale before PS4.
Any developers out there want to suggest a few things Sony's can do to make things easier on you?

It's quite obvious that you're not a developer, and don't really know what you're talking about. This would appear to be good news, if true. I'll bet there's not a single developer out there that won't welcome this news.
Well good news for devs and Sony, now they might be in the future using a CPU architecture that is universally known it shouldnt take devs so long to get results from it. If I was a dev and 2 consoles were released 1 with a genius albeit a pig to work with architecture (going by what I have read in the past) and 1 with an architecture that I know inside and out, I know which I would work with.
Either way if true it can only mean good things for us gamers.

The names you mention are big developers with cash to splash on training. The smaller developers do not have the cash to splash and one failed product can cause them to fail. Even if that product is of a high quality. So they either spend 5 months extra developing your PS3 product or instead ignore it and develop for the 360 in a shorter time period.
Simply put, time is money. Even Valve refuse to develop for the PS3 and that says something about it's issues for developers because those guys as we all know are incredibly talented.

Well, that's not exactly the best approach. It'll be for the best to make your machine as easy to program for as possible, so you can get games out quicker and cheaper.
The big developers would be able to get their big hitters out sooner aswell.

Alot of people don't want 256 players online. Some people want what games like Modern Warfare 2 have to offer, because, you know, that's why it sells quite a few copies.
You start chucking some people in to 256 players online, they'll run a mile with the sheer scope of it all. Alot of gamers just want a quick arcade fix, pick up and play.

Exactly my point, it was in the lead. The fact that it was out a year before wasn't something I thought I had to make obvious. A lead is a lead. The PS2 out a good 18 months and was in the lead when the Gamecube and the Xbox launched, and a major factor in its popularity and market position during the last generation.
My point in my original post is that small developers cannot afford the extra development costs that harsh development for the PS3 has.
The games industry is much harsher than it was a decade a go. Products take years to produce, and one failure can kill that developer. Look at Free Radical as a prime example, they put all their development time into Haze, it failed both critically and commercially. Next up goes the developer.
The majority of developers cannot afford the risk, so they go with the safest bet. Currently the 360 offers a larger userbase than PS3, has more games sold per console than either the PS3 or the Wii and offers easier development. Whatever your favoured stance towards a particular console, you can't deny business is business and going with the safest bet is just good business.
What you failed to point out is that not only are Naughty Dog, Insomniac and Guerilla big devs, They're also owned in whole or in part by sony and therefore only make games for the PS3. If they couldn't get the most out of the machine then they'd really be in trouble.
Can someone explain this difficulty concept? So, a new piece of hardware comes on the scene, you learn it, you know it, you build for it. How is this different to say building websites in php & asp? You learn c#, you build a site. You learn php, you build a site.
I understand there are massive variations in the languages and how they are used but surely the concept of learning something is the same?
It's not just about how easy it is to program for, it's about the potential return on the investment of time. You want to release a quality PS3 game, you need to get your team learning how to optimise for the console. That takes time and money, both of which are in short supply in the marketplace. You need to know that you're going to see the sales to cover it when you're done. Spending 6 months on research followed by 2 years of programming is non-profit time, if you then only sell a few thousand copies you're screwed.
Being on board with Sony in that respect makes their life much easier because they'll get advice directly AND they have financing to keep the project going they wouldn't have otherwise. It would've been a travesty if Uncharted 2 hasn't been released due to the developer going under.
But I never saw the point in using Cell as a gaming processor - it's a number cruncher, not a gaming platform. Maybe they went that way because they wanted loads of cores but the small chips weren't available at the time. Now that's all different.

But that's what you have a rating system for - someone annoys you, you block them, ignore them, mute them, negative rep them and you likely won't see them again.
I use the "avoid" option on Live with extreme prejudice. Squeaky little 5 year-olds calling everyone fags? Gone. Constant racist homophobic slurs (and I don't mind a comment clearly made in jest but they can do OTT)? Gone and complaints filed. That's what it's there for.
And because they tend to gravitate together, blocking a handful cuts out a massive amount of other people they're in games with. The system works, you just have to use it. I hardly ever hear morons like that these days.

I thought that SONY would continue with the Cell processor and increase the number of cores and maybe the the clock speed and then add more memory.
Polyphonic a year or so ago were showing a version of GT5 running on 4 PS3s that could either run at 2160p 60fps or 1080 at 240fps. Link
This to me seemed to be a taster of what to expect in the future. Developers have invested a lot in getting up to speed with the current PS3 architecture and the results when developers have invested that time are spectacular. Continuing with the Cell would mean that developers could continue to use their knowledge from the PS3.
^Thats why i said other developers should just get info off those developers that know how to use it. Look at the bioshock developer 2K, when they decided to make the game for ps3 they admitted they struggled and so got help off sony, in which sony taught them how to use it. Now they say they know how it works and i can make games for the sony no problem.
Sony probably want to move to a much cheaper console to produce. If I remember rightly they were making a loss even when the PS3 launched at about £450.

So, its ok for 1st party Devs or absolutely fecking massive Dev houses to 'learn' how to program for the PS3 but what about smaller independant Devs? They just have to wing it and hope there Game does/sells well?

Cell was always going to be a risk, but that alone got them major publicity. Every time some scientist tied a couple together to cure cancer or some render farm used a few to generate stupidly large 3D images with realtime raytracing, I bet Sony sold another handful of consoles.
Of course it was offset by being a mare to program for. It's totally understandable that they don't want the same issues with the PS4 that they had with multiplatform games this time round - you all remember the lag and frame rate issues, right?
4 cores is now standard across PCs, so hopefully by the time the next gen comes round they'll be running 6 or 8 so they won't need the Cell. Everyone wins.

Sony will of course be looking into more financially viable options considering the way this gen has gone so far. No-one expected MS and Nintendo to grab as much market share as they have done, so Sony have to head into the next generation thinking things won't necessarily go there way.
As for keeping future Playstation's difficult to develop for, the 360 has it's fair share of shoddy games and it's supposed to be easy to develop for. Two Worlds or Vampire Rain anyone?!

Even before the addition of pads and the like (which last time i checked they actually manufacture at a profit) sony lose cash on every console. Therefore they wouldn't be making anything off of selling them as servers and the like.

sony will probably do them a special... take out most of the pads, component cables, manuals etc - all the stuff they dont need, sell the ps3's to them at the price the shops get them for, then repackage the stripped out goods and profitize from them.

Dont disagree with you mate. What im saying is, and correct me if im wrong but, im under the impression that mw had quiet afew more than 18 players in a match on the pc. It was only simplified because it was developed with the xbox mainly in mind.Same goes for most games, as more people have xboxs thats where the money is. Had it been the other way round xbox would of been dead and buried by now. The PS2 was also a bitch to code for in the beginning. The PS3 is designed for a long life time. Do you want your console to show everything it can do in the first few months, or do you want the games to get better and better as time goes on. The first games on the PS2 were that bad i sold my launch day console after six months and never bought another. But look what that little box achieved and is still achieving now. I applaud Sony for sticking thier necks out and pushing the hardware side of things. Anyone could have stuck PC hardware together to make a console. Its been done before ie a PC. Nintendo took last gen hardware and current control tech. No new hardware what so ever. Sony are the only console maker that is pushing the tech forwards. I'm not slagging Microsoft or Nintendo off. They both took the easier option and as yet its paying off.

Wow, a full console war. I haven't seen this in a while. Let me join in; The PS3 is, in fact, the best console. By this, I mean that it has the best hardware (the 60Gb does, at least.) How easy it is to develop for, the quality of the games and the support for customers etc doesn't matter, the console is what matters. With the arguement of which console is better, you look at the hardware and software. So if you're going to argue about consoles, do it right. A tip to Sony (I've said this before so I'll be quick)- team up with Apple for your preferred god's sake! Also, make the PS4 cheap, durable and - most important of all - earlier than the 360's heir. And give the next PSP 2 analogue sticks, bloody hell, it's a no-brainer. By the way, stop playing the intelligence card then proceeding to write your posts using awful spelling and grammar. The system works to an extent, but it does have its flaws. Even after having of negative reped someone I've occasionally (not very often though mind you) ended up with the same people in the next match.
That and I have received negative a couple of times most likely just for being better at a game than someone else, because as far as I'm aware I've never said anything to anger anyone else.
One of the other problems is that most people don't really care about how much negative feedback they've received because chances are they never check. And as long as they're still able to play games it's another reason not to care what some percentages or stars mean.

Ever heard of sentences? technically, your post was, and correct me if I'm wrong, 2 sentences long. If that's how you speak, you must have un-naturally large lungs. (I'm basing that on the fact that you stated that you write how you speak). 3. If you're typing fast, it means that you're in a rush. If this is the case, why are you flaring up an arguement with me, or even posting at all? And if you're not in a rush, why are you typing fast? You also stated something about each console having a fanbase, thus being equal. This is something else (referring to my previous post) that doesn't affect quality of the console. For example; Millions of people use Ebay, but this doesn't mean that the service is reliable and good quality. Higher user numbers, generally speaking, is a result of lower prices. (That wasn't aimed at the 360/PS3 dispute).
Oh, and I forgot to mention; I don't know whether or not this was intended/noticed, but you admitted that your spelling and grammar affected your intelligence. I'm only pointing this out because, from what I have experienced, people usually deny this sort of accusation.

Personally, I think these articles are posted by CVG as flamewar bait.
They must really roll around laughing as every couple of days or so, a fairly pointless headline is posted - usually pure conjecture, (i.e. 'PS4 may contain microchips' or 'Xbox consoles sell better than PS3 consoles between 9am and 10.58am every third Tuesday of the month').
All they need to do then is retire to a safe distance and wait for the insults to fly.
My suggestion is twofold:
1 - CVG stick to actual journalism, meaning that unless there is anything noteworthy to report on, don't run any articles, (ever heard of the old saying that 'if you haven't got anything useful to say, don't say anything'?)
2- People using the forums should try to grow up a little. Insulting others over their preferred console is unbelievably childish and some of the pathetic insults on here are embarrassing and simply perpetuate the belief that gamers are odd creatures with no social skills and foul mouths. CVG ought to crack down on some of the posts left on here and ban people if they overstep the grounds of good taste - I'm talking to both dorian2011 and moss66 here. Grow up, the pair of you - I don't care who started it, show a little restraint.
right im going to try to put a end 2 this bs. fair enough your sis was cracked on on psn. Not my fault and i do agree when people hear a female on psn they swam like bees round honey and i think its pathetic. Your there to game not pull. Home is equally to blame as from what i can remember, they should include children avtars aswell so that people can plainly see they are talking to children. Last time i was on there someone came up to me dressed as a werewolf asking if he could eat me. was going to tell him to f off but realised it could be some 10 year old and didn't. But not everyone thinks so when they see some lara croft style avtar they will try to hit on it (please sony sort that out for home users). Now im not saying i haven't run into many RICHARDS on psn but when i do its quiet easy to mute them and maybe through just plain luck just dont seem to run into them again.
Im happy to stop the attacks as life is too short. But just stop calling playstation users nonces because there are lots of different people (including parents) who don't appreciate reading that bs. Regardless of what you and your family have been through. Please send my sympathies to your sister as playstation users don't all use it for those reasons as i think you already know.

I have to disagree with your first point about CVG posting these kind of articles. I've seen this article and many others accused of being flame-bait on plenty of other sites too. If these articles were exclusive to CVG, then I'd agree, but there wasn't anything wrong with this one IMO.
Your second point I agree with 100%. Dorian2011 is definitely an annoying one, who posts little to nothing of any sense in regards to the article and would have been banned already if I could decide. All of his excuses when people question his comments are starting to wear thin too.
