Major UK videogame retailer, Game, has branched out into the music business this Christmas.
Billed as "stocking filler" items, the retailer will sell the top 20 music CDs throughout Christmas, both in stores and through its website.
A Game rep said: "We know from our research that there is real overlap across entertainment products. We're committed to giving our customers everything they want for Christmas and to support this, we are launching a small album range within our stocking fillers area with the added bonus of earning Reward points."
So it'll have all the Susan Boyle you want, then. Unless you're buying Rage Against the Machine as part of the nationwide anti-Simon Cowell movement (which we're seriously considering). Not another Christmas number one.

Seriously considering? You should be buying it.. NOW!
Back on topic. Game used to sell music CD's back in the day. Also movies on VHS. Can't remember if DVD's were available back then. Around the time the first Resident Evil was released in The States and Japan. I remember our local GAME had 3 levels. Top was all PC, Ground floor was consoles and basement was music and movies, TV etc. Big store back then too. That was before Electronics Boutique took over.

EB took over GAME? So did GAME take EB over years later then? 'Cause everywhere I remember there being an EB there was then a GAME.
On how things look at the moment if GAME was to make these Top 40 CDs nearer the price of other shops ASDA, HMV etc etc, it’ll be a nice little earner for GAME Group Plc. I wonder if other things will come in the future to help fight the Interweb and DLC?

No, no and no. There's a few reasons why I dislike that campaign, but most of all it's utterly pointless. If you want to make a statement with your wallet don't buy anything rather than doubling Sony BMG's profits

As I remember, EB bought GAME and kept the Trading name here. We had a GAME and EB. I worked in the EB store. EB took over and kept both shops open. Now they are both called GAME. Actually I have just checked and aparrently they bought Gamestation too.

Even though I remembered what others did that GAME took over EB, I did just look it up and you're right. GAME was failing so EB took over GAME and then changed all its stores to GAME to seperate it from the US EB.
I know Wiki is often cited as a not a reliable source but that doesn't mean everything on there is bullcrap
Atually, I'd say you guys are right. What dark_gamer said does now ring a bell.
I remember buying my copy of Super Mario Kart from a shop called Future Zone. Anyone remember those?
Never heard of Future Zone, but then again I was only 2 when SMK came out over here
But yeah I do still remember EB being around and then it all changing to GAME so assumed GAME took over, but like I said even though Wiki isn't considered 100% reliable the details are on there
Anyway back on subject, What would probably make this news better is if GAME begun to sell game OSTs rather than tripe like JLS and whatnot
Edit: will you look at that, CVG is mentioned in the development section of SMK on Wiki, and even has its own Wiki page
I remember well the EB take over of Game stores and it is in fact that way around.
EB took over Game, but EB UK were a seperate entity from the US business and simply licensed the name EB from the US company. By rebranding as Game they didnt have to pay the US company money for each sale in an EB store. Making themselves a bucket load more cash and seperating them from the US company which they were linked with in name only.

I like the idea myself but thats because ive been a fan of R.A.T.M for the past 17 years and can't stand X factor and its teeny pop crap. What are your reasons for not liking it then
EB Games US purchased Future Zone in 1995 i believe, then later they performed a management buyout freeing them up, however they carried on using the Electronics Boutique name under license. They then purchased Game in 1999 (i think, it's been a while)and ran the two businesses separately. When the license to use the Electronics Boutique brand expired, EB management opted to use the Game brand, as it was theirs, it was free and it already had high street recognition. So they rebranded all their EB stores as Game stores. So in conclusion EB bought out Game. The End.

I really don't mean for this to come across as offensive - especially not to the person that has one of the best avatars on this site!
I like the X-factor as an entertainment show, but I do not like the monopoly it has over the Christmas number 1, nor do I generally like the single that's released at the end. That said, Mr. Cowell is right in that he's stopped the reign of the novelty single.
But this campaign seems a bit pompous to me. I know there's a few people who bought the single who are doing it to make a point - which I guess would be fine if it wasn't doubling Sony's profits therefore making the point moot (you'd actually be making more of a point by buying neither single).
But the majority of people I see who are joining in on Facebook etc. are on their high horse about how the general public has no taste in music, and they think that they finally have a chance to prove they're better. Seems a bit arrogant to me for them to feel the need to prove that they're the only ones who have good taste in music.

Yeah, I think I'd agree with you on that one.
I've been a little concerned that this was just a piece of viral marketing by Sony BMG, so I was steering well clear.
I loathe X-Factor and really like RATM. I already have a copy of 'Killing in the Name Of', so I didn't see the point of joining in on this.
However, I do just find myself more than a little nauseated by this Joe, Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole somehow insinuating that he's 'worked hard for this' - no, he really hasn't. He's won a naff gameshow and that's it.
Then, I saw an interview with Joe and felt compelled to download the RATM song.
I couldn't care less about the Christmas Number 1, I couldn't care less about bringing down X-Factor, whether this is somehow an act of rebellion or whether this will damage that kids inevitably short career - but, I cannot stand people that replace the word 'me' with 'us'.

Yes - I am that petty.
They may not work as hard overall, but I gather it's actually a pretty gruelling few weeks. Either way there's no denying that they have talent, it just may not be to everyone's taste.
The sad fact is that there was some pretty good acts on this year. None had funny accents, and none of them won.

At the end of the day, whether they have talent or not is immaterial - it'll be the marketing that makes them.
If this kid really wants to show his talent, he's hardly going to be able to do it as part of Cowells Machine. He'll have no say in what he sings, releases or when he goes to the toilet.
If he has any talent, it'll be wasted on Miley Cyrus covers and packaged like a piece of High School Musical memorabilia. Ultimately, it all comes down to Cowell and his warped idea of what constitutes good taste (whatever he may say).
I can honestly say that I think this kid will not have a record deal in about 18 months - I think even Cowell knows he's got nothing with this one and he's shown that he's only interested if there's money to be made. I also think that X-Factor has about another 2 years, tops.
It is rather amusing that Mr Cowell said he saved us from novelty songs, giving Mr Blobby as one example when he was responsible for it. Yeah thanks Cowell, you saved us from... erm... damn!
I don't really care that SonyBMG are getting the money, it's just a kind of two fingers to Cowell etc I suupose. I haven't done it though. But I haven't been as vocal and cutting as some people have towards people who have bought the RATM single!
It's not as bad as last years's Hallelujah debacle. That really was pompous, peole treating the Buckley version (I LOVE JB) as if it was something sacred and was a song he wrote as he was drowning and had express wishes for nobody to cover it (his mother already released 'Forget Her' against his wishes. It was pretty crap though IMO), even though it had been licensed to the stuff like Hollyoaks and The OC! The xfactor version did suck any subtlety out of the song, and the fact the JB version is so stark, just him and guitar and f**k loads of reverb, made the xfactor version just feel wrong somehow!
However, Sony got all the money last year. Grace and Various Positions are both on Columbia.
I'd rather Game sold game soundtrack CDs rather than chart crud.
Seconded. I'd defo buy game soundtracks, but wonder how many other people would? I hate going into GAME stores. They only ever seem to be full of chavs and young kids.
