LittleBigPlanet Review

Review: Time to meet your maker
LittleBigPlanet is not a game you play, put down and forget about until you next turn on the PS3. It's a full-time occupation. A potential obsession. But most of all it's the platform-defining title that PS3 needed to happen this side of Christmas.

Not many games have you sitting on the train on your way into work with a notepad, jotting down ideas for things to try when you get home. Not many games have you in the pub discussing the mechanics behind a fully operable car, or how you make a giant robot that can shoot fireballs from its fists. Not with grown men at least.

The clever thing about LBP is that it's as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. The standalone story mode (yes there is one) contains a straightforward platformer that's so well-made and inventive that it alone is good enough a reason to purchase. Think of it like a physics-based Mario game. A very good one.

If you have a good time there you can go online and within seconds you'll be playing the levels of others. And there'll be hundreds of them.

So you get all that even before you dive into the Create mode, the part where developer Media Molecule has really shined. Again, you can get as deep as you like into creating your own stuff. Simple levels are super easy to create, more complex ideas take time and effort.

You can spend 20 minutes putting together a simple series of platforms to jump on, or six hours making a rocket, setting up its trajectory and a creating a fully-working engine-detachment mechanism.

Before we get into that though, let's breathe a little. The story mode is frickin' brilliant - even by Super Mario's standards. The mechanics are kept basic on the surface with Sackboy's only two abilities being jump and grab. That's it.

But the physics-based elements within each of the levels, the clever scenarios that MM has put together and the variety in gameplay is sheer genius. There are basic platforming sections, stages that have you running from giant mechs that smash everything as it rumbles along (see the video below), stages where you pilot ships through mid-air obstacle courses, drive cars at high speed or creep through the darkness with a dog holding a lamp.

Something as simple as the ability to grab onto things becomes a really clever mechanic when you factor in the game's physics and how this lets you manipulate objects, pulling blocks into place, grabbing on to moving objects to make use of their momentum, dragging key items through obstacle courses or pulling over towers to bring the items on top tumbling down.

It's traditional platforming with a twist added by real-time physics. Mario for the 21st century, if you will. And the chirpy music, gorgeous backdrops and comical scripts make this one of the most charming games we've ever played. Ever.

The Story mode will keep you busy for a fair while, too. There are three to four main levels in each world, and there are eight worlds. Then in each level there are two to three well-hidden keys, each key unlocking a bonus stage when collected.

Bonus stages range from small, cleverly-devised mini-games, like skipping a spinning pole or bouncing to grab orbs, to full-fledged levels in their own right that need to be done at speed or other unique scenarios.

That totals over 50 levels and when you factor in all the secrets hidden in each level, there's plenty of replay value to be had.

All this gives you the perfect excuse to get other players involved. Up to four Sackboys can tackle any of the levels at the same time (all levels CAN be finished in single-player though). It's seamless drop-in, drop-out play too; as soon as you turn on a controller a Sackboy pops on screen. Turn it off and he'll disappear.

Dotted around level are signs that indicate how many players are needed for a particular bonus puzzle and they'll get you working co-operatively in all sorts of clever ways.

You'll be combining your strength to pull things that are too heavy for a lone Sackboy, hitting multiple switches, operating machinery for other Sackboys and other simple but often challenging, physics-based puzzles.

While we expected the four-player aspect to be the best part of the game, we actually found it to be a little overcrowded at times. When four of you occupy the same space it's often harder to negotiate platforming sections, and keep track of which Sackboy you're controlling. Yes, this is despite the option to modify your Sackboy's appearance.

Some sections, even, are near impossible for all four of you to survive. One part has you grab onto a chain which lowers you down a narrow chasm full of fatal electrically-charged cones. With a single player, getting through it is mildly challenging.

With three or four players, all pulling their own chains (or the same chain if they go together) in different directions, people will die. And it's annoying when you know you only died because the others got in the way. Hardcore players will want to finish it alone first.

And once you have, it's straight over to the Create mode where the real genius becomes clear. With a few simple tools you can pretty much make anything. There's nothing in the Story mode that can't be made in the Create mode and that's testament to how diverse it is.

You start off with the basics. You make shapes with different types of material that all act as you'd expect; cloth is soft, rubber has grip, wood is tough and heavy and so on. Then you get into the more mechanical options - motors that spin with varying selectable speeds and strengths, pistons, jets, wires and springs.

Then you have switches - activated by either buttons or proximity chips - which can trigger any of the mechanical objects. Imagine the basics: you make a car-shaped wooden block, slap two rubber circles on it with motors on them set to spin fast and you've got yourself a moving car.

Look a little deeper and you can associate the motors on the wheels with a switch and put that switch on the car. Now you have a car which you can start and stop yourself. Attach jets to the bottom activated by a separate button and you've got a car that can fly.

All that, we assure you, only scratches the surface of what's possible in Create mode. The countless videos already posted on YouTube only prove its depth.

LittleBitPlanet is a monumental achievement. 'User generated content' has been talked about in corners of the industry for the last few years but Sony has truly nailed it.

Its simple exterior as the most charming and inventive platformer ever only hides a level of accessible creative freedom like no other.

Media Molecule has given you the tools to create your own game, basically, and if you get into it as much we have, it's all you'll think about.

You'll look for inspiration for levels, mechanical dilemmas or puzzles in every corner of your life. And in your sleep. It will take over your conversations with fellow players. You will become obsessed. You have been warned.

9.6 - is that all? Smile
Seriously, I'm glad it's garnered such a high score. Wonder if we'll see a plethora of clones in the next few years...

signed up for the beta and i gotta say its pretty kl but i found the jumping real clunky but then again it is the beta version. It's a real neat idea and the execution was done exactly as i thought it would but is it the best game on ps3? not really

Great score for a great game. I was interested to read online that nintendo were very close to a deal with MM.

Jebus, can you imagine LBP on the Wii? I dont think it would of been getting the scores it is if Nintendo had got it.

Dont know if its the kind of game that will make me buy a PS3 but it certainly adds to the appeal.

And another great British Dev, all good.
StonecoldMC on 14 Oct '08
Meh! Colour me underwhelmed!

I just don't get the appeal of this game at all.

Great review, describing exactly how I felt after playing the Beta. Obsessed? Oh yes! Now how do I make Churchill doggies head wobble?.....

I hope this game gets the sales it deserves and it is great to see a british developer pushing the boundaries. MM should be well proud of themselves. I wish this was coming to the 360. I might have to fork out for a ps3 after all now. a real next-gen game.
shellster2 on 14 Oct '08
well done to that little company. media molecule i think. looks like this one will have universal praise. can definatley see copy-cats on the horizon. id bet they arent far off either.

This game is just a cross between Mario and The Incredible Machine!

four AMAZING exclusives well worth the price of a ps3 (and two of them are PSN games!) plus MANY brilliant cross platform games for dirt cheap now, with the ability to play them online for free.
will see next week if motorstorm 2 is another exclusive worth it. and resistance 2, if thats your thing.

why are you trying to do a sales pitch? are you like 8 years old or something? oh and can you stop being an utter c0ck on the 360 HDD thread? No? thought not...

A score like that and I still don't see the appeal of this game at all. I will probably give it a go but I still think everyone is a little too much caught up in the hype.

I don't think my imagination would do this game any justice. Video games killed my imagination, I can only do what I'm told to do, I'm not supposed to be the creative one the developers are.

Looks tempting though....

Reminds me a lot of Amazing Contraption, one of the best flash games out there in my opinion. It has me trying to figure out the puzzles for hours on end yet it only has five tools to work with.

I can only imagine how damaging LBP will be to my life, especially my sleep patterns! ShockedVery Happy

The difference here is that fans of LBP have played the Beta, so any hype is warranted. If you're a fan of shooting things, then LBP isn't for you. For anybody who always reckons 'I can do better than that!', then LBP is the perfect game to prove it. Luckily for me I love all genres equally, so a blast of Gears 2 followed by a sesh of LBP sounds like good times to me!
Mark240473 on 14 Oct '08
It is a very good game, but the beta grew stale very quickly in my humble opinion.

If someone joins a level and their connection is rubbish it ruins the whole game, plus, there are a lot of levels being made that are absolute cack, even some of the ones that receive massive user ratings can still be fairly rubbish. There are some BRILLIANT ones that have been made, but for every good one there are 4 sh1t ones.

I'm looking forward to the single player big time, that I couldn't get enough of, but I'm not sure whether thats a good thing or not in LBP, doesn't it sort of defeat the point considering the focus on the community element?

I'll wait until Xmas to buy this one, I'll be Dead Spacing it next Friday methinks.
khr0nik on 14 Oct '08
Well, I won't be buying as I don't have a PS3! The hype machine has been cranked up for this one, but then it's not be hyped by the mainstream media like GTA4 was.

Doesn't look like my thing to be honest, I can't be doing with getting all caught up in games, creating levels. I've been the same since Populous (which to be honest, I thought this game was like - I'd heard little of the platform element, as not being a PS3 owner I hadn't hoovered up all the preview stuff!). That's not to say this doesn't make it a great game - if that doesn't contradict me. I am open minded enough to see when a game is great, even when it's not my type.

However, it is great to see the PS3 getting some truely great games. I think you've got to say MGS and this are the real 'big' titles. Motostorm/RFOM won't define the system - titles of this quality and originality (according to reviews and people's opinions of the beta) will.

Good post. You don't have to be 'in to' something to respect it as a good game. Makes a change from all the fanboy warbling of late.

Good post. You don't have to be 'in to' something to respect it as a good game. Makes a change from all the fanboy warbling of late.

Very, very true.

I have to say that this is the first thing that peaked my interest in this. I was AWARE of LBP (due to not being under a rock) but had never paid it any real attention. It sounds really interesting. Just concerned on the "time suckage" that this and Fallout 3 together will cause!
Random Hangman on 14 Oct '08
Good review. Looking forward to next week.

Planning my MGS level already....hehe
nottsville on 14 Oct '08
There are some BRILLIANT ones that have been made, but for every good one there are 4 sh1t ones.

You could be talking about anything there.
In fact, 4 to 1 is a pretty good ratio all in all.

I saw some absolute genius online in the beta, and that was just from the couple of weeks it was running. Imagine what those same people, and others yet to play it, are going to be churning out after having the full game for another month or two and getting used to all the tools and added materials.

I spent hours on the beta alone and personally can't wait to get hold of the final version next week. It has nothing to do with hype and everything to do with it being an amazing little piece of software.
If the beta was anything to go by then the insane amount of hours that are going to be spent on this by me are worth the price I paid for my launch PS3 alone.
I imagine I'm not alone either and as long as those people keep at it I couldn't care less whether it gets the mainstream recognition it deserves because we'll all be creating and playing each-others' designs for a long time to come and I'll be more than happy.

I think it's fair to say I, along with a lot of people on here, am obsessed with videogames. That's why I spend my time on forums like this and talking videogames down the pub. Playing the beta has caused LBP to become an obsession within an obsession for me. It's insane. I have a notebook full of sketches and ideas for levels in the final game. I end up scribbling on the bus, at work, at home, in the pub, everywhere. It's frigging mental. I was up until 3 on saturday/sunday just getting my level finished to upload so I didn't lose it at the beta's end. I didn't even notice the minutes turn into hours.

It's not going to be for everybody, not in the slightest. What I would say though is to give it a try if you can and make your own mind up rather than blindly writing it off because you don't 'get' it.
theideal on 14 Oct '08
I was so sad when the beta ended. I must have already spent longer playing the beta than almost any other game.

It takes over your life; I have paper all over my desk at work now as I make sketches for new ideas and how to actually make them happen. In the beta the controlls weren't perfect but it was the only thing that let it down.

The hype it's been getting is fully deserved. It won't be everyone's cup of tea but no game is. For me it is the best game on the ps3. If only games like Uncharted and MGS4 came with level creators as brilliant as LBP's.
jimmygoogle on 14 Oct '08
K109 you missed Uncharted out of the great Ps3 exclusives.

Why does everyone always forget about it? Its one of the best new franchises created in years!

Lbp looks ace and I have it on pre order. I never expected it to get scores this high though.

That will only get worse when it hits retail. If it bothers you now, I'd avoid it like the plague at that point.

This is the only PS3 exclusive that makes me wish I had the console. It's sounded fantastic since the first details started to appear and it clearly lives up to that.

Now I need to figure out how I'm going to get hold of a PS3 so I can get in there Smile

I'm not writing it off, the very first words in my post is "it is a very good game". I stated at the end that I will be buying it. I've invested heavy time into the beta also. I'm old school, I love platforming, and I can't wait to rape the s**t out of the single player.

My biggest gripe was the connection issues. And I wholeheartedly acknowledge its a beta, so I shouldn't be surprised that there will be teething issues, thats one of the main points of a beta to begin with, help work out the bugs right?

OH WOWshould be a 10.0 at least mate just for the originality

(*this would never get made on 360, where originality is at a premium, in fact, originality is simply absent from the 360 line-up of shooters*)

Now you know I'm feeling on top of the world, y'see I always knew I backed the right horse this generation, and this great title confirms that

What with this, Unchartered as well as Heavy Rain and White Knight Chronicles, not mentioning Team ICO's "Project", PS3 is the home of the original and great new IP's

I tell you what :

PS3 owners needn't be ashamed, as the console now has a greater catalogue of original titles and an embarrassment of riches in that departmnt to come

Sony PS3 Exclusive Line-Up

*LBP (better than the original Mario says CVGs Mike, what greater endorsement)
*White Knight Chronicles (FFXIII beater)
*Motostorm 2 (need I say more)
*Heavy Rain (another original masterpiece in the making thank god for Sony)
*Final Fantasy Vesrus XIII (from the dark mind of Tetsuya Nomura)
*Gran Turismo 5 (best racing series of the last decade)
*Team ICO Project (just calm down)
*God of War III (makes 360 owners jealous)
*Resistance 2 (shooty but let's not dwell on that)
*Killzone 2 (this list is too much)

microsoft 360 exclusive line-up

halo wars (this is just laughable)
halo expansion (milking a dead cow)
fables 2 (poor-mans Oblivion)
alan wake (?zzzzz?zzzzz?)
banjo kazooie (ZZZZZZZZZZZ)
????????????? (i can't think of any more thats how dire the situation is)

p.s Sony create great studios like God of War's Santa Monica Studio's or Uncharted's Naughty Dog and LBP's Media Molecule whereas M$ destroy them, like the unjust closure of the once great Ensemble studios of Age of Empires fame, or the slow leach like rape of Rare. What a terrible shame. Just think about that before you pick up the devil's box

alan wake (?zzzzz?zzzzz?)
banjo kazooie (ZZZZZZZZZZZ)
????????????? (i can't think of any more thats how dire the situation is)

p.s Sony create great studios like God of War's Santa Monica Studio's or Uncharted's Naughty Dog and LBP's Media Molecule whereas M$ destroy them, like the unjust closure of the once great Ensemble studios of Age of Empires fame, or the slow leach like rape of Rare. What a terrible shame. Just think about that before you pick up the devil's box

Firstly I would like to say that Suivaloom is the biggest fanboy c**k I've ever come across...talk about a sad sad little closed mind...I have a friend who owns a 360 and a PS3 and he prefers the 360 as he thinks its a better games console..he isn't a sad little masturbating fanboy.

Secondly there is no way on gods green earth I would buy a PS3 for this game, I'm sure its the best thing since sliced bread yada yada yada...but I can't help get the feeling this is just hyped up cartoony crap. I like realism in my games and this just doesn't appeal...still its nice to see originality getting good reviews.

Oh and Suivaloom....Fable 2 a poor man's Oblivion?! Jesus your more f**ked in the head than I thought.
Dave_25 on 14 Oct '08
Suivaloom, Sony doesn't need a raving fanboy like you to sell their machine - games like LBP can do that. Stop embarrasing us impartial PS3 fans with your wild wittering and just enjoy the bloody games that you harp on about so much. Who cares about forthcoming games lists? Just bloody fanboys, that's who!

You're obsessed, man!

What's worse is, when he writes these 'impartial lists', he constantly overlooks what is probably the 360s biggest release this year, Gears of War 2...

I'm not sure if this guy is taking the p**s any more or if he actually believes the tripe he spouts?
Thank God for Sony? Devil box? WTF is that deluded nut bar on about...
_Marty_ on 14 Oct '08
He also missed out Mass Effect 2

Got to admit i do like the look of this game.I'm all one for creativity so this this just floats my boat.

Now all i need is a PS3 Wink
Buggs_17 on 14 Oct '08
Am I the only one that thinks this looks a turkey?
I mean I'm all for originality but after watching the video in the review (the Giant dead cow on wheels) I thought it looked plain boring. Keep pulling right on pad and hitting jump while running through green blobs. Sorry but this is no 'super mario world' or 'yoshis island'. Not even a 'braid'. Looks more like a slow sonic the hedgehog only loads cooler looking.
Attack me all you like but it's just my opinion and my opinion says it looks boring.
wando77 on 14 Oct '08
I wasn't gonna pick this up immediately but looks like I'm gonna have too - with some Dead Space on the 360 to boot.

F**K all these "my console is better than yours" comments. Sick to death of it.
bagofbones on 14 Oct '08

*LBP (better than the original Mario says CVGs Mike, what greater endorsement)
*White Knight Chronicles (FFXIII beater)
*Motostorm 2 (need I say more)
*Heavy Rain (another original masterpiece in the making thank god for Sony)
*Final Fantasy Vesrus XIII (from the dark mind of Tetsuya Nomura)
*Gran Turismo 5 (best racing series of the last decade)
*Team ICO Project (just calm down)
*God of War III (makes 360 owners jealous)
*Resistance 2 (shooty but let's not dwell on that)
*Killzone 2 (this list is too much)

microsoft 360 exclusive line-up

halo wars (this is just laughable)
halo expansion (milking a dead cow)
fables 2 (poor-mans Oblivion)
alan wake (?zzzzz?zzzzz?)
banjo kazooie (ZZZZZZZZZZZ)
????????????? (i can't think of any more thats how dire the situation is)

Nice to see that you missed out the biggest release of the year gears of war 2.
It's gonna be massive and it's going to be the biggest selling game of this year.
And a 360 exclusive, not coming to the pc.

Too many games from next year in your ps3 list as well, always a sign that you're struggling when you throw in games that are a mile away from being released(haha).
Heavy rain is the only one that really interests me in that list(motorstorm? wtf).

Delighted LBP is a massive success though, definitely buying it and looking forward to finally having a big exclusive on the ps3(to go alongside metal gear).
I don't know whether LBP will take the crown from uncharted drake's fortune as my favourite ps3 game, but it looks like it'll be a heap of fun.
blagger on 15 Oct '08
I hope it sells as well as it scores.

Result that it delivers!

Shame I've no PS3, I'd be on this in a heart beat.

sorry to disagree but I'd like it to be Fable 2 but it's more than likely going to be bleeding FIFA09.

Also, he didn't mention Uncharted because he probably never played it. You have to think in parts of that game, hard to do without a brain.
voodoo341 on 15 Oct '08
Lots of Sony sponsored fanboy crap

Oh my god what a sad case you are. You slate the 360 for shooters then you mention in your list of "amazing" ps3 games two shooters both of which are sequels to average games. Then mention a couple of driving games, again both sequels.

Meanwhile back on Earth.....

Picked up a US version last night and the game really does deserve all the critical acclaim. I played the Beat quite a lot, but one thing that surprised me about the full game was the quality of the music. The African tune is especially cool. The amount of variety in the levels is also impressive and I didn't want to turn it off last night. It is really addictive trying to collect all of the items in a level, so replay value is definitely there.

Another thing I noticed was the amount of materials that didn't feature in the Beta. I have only collected 25% of the single player items and I already have a much larger group of materials. The create mode is going to be mind-boggling once all the items have been collected!

All in all, probably the Carlsberg of PS3 games right now.
Mark240473 on 16 Oct '08
I was torn between this and Fallout 3. But after all the glowing reviews I think I'll have to pick up a copy of this.

I can get Fallout 3 at a later date, I like the idea of creating my own Fair ground. Smile

Such a great time to be a gamer at the moment. A huge variety of excellent titles coming up on all the different systems. If it wasn't for these great exclusives there really would be no point in 2 next-gen consoles. Long may original games continue.
Currychips on 16 Oct '08
This is definately enough to make me buy a PS3. Ive been happy with my 360 but with this and a good looking future line up it seems worth getting involved.
Im so sick of hearing people bitch and moan about the two consoles, pick the one you want, play it and shut up. I hopefully will be lucky enough to have both so i can enjoy everything and not miss out on original and brilliant games such as this.
Skyliner on 16 Oct '08
Well done Sony! This looks like an amazing game - at last - their exclusive content is coming along nicely - it just took a bit of time!
ranaraptor on 17 Oct '08
This is a very good game, with huge potential. But you have to like platform games and to be a creative person. I have played the beta and I enjoyed it very much. Very Happy
Sisse1Player on 17 Oct '08
Wow. I might actually finally buy a game for my PS3. Embarrassing that it took *this* long to release an original game that's actually any good.

Nothing so far on the PS3 in the genres I prefer has been worth 10 bucks - let alone 40 or 50.

Shooters are still a joke on consoles (gamepads are slow and unresponsive, no matter what any fanboys might say - you can't do a 360 turn in a quarter second, and then instantly micro-control your sniper-shot. EOD.

Racing games - *lol*. Gran Torturismo came with my console, and I nearly cried playing it. Anyone that calls Forza or GT "racing" has obviously never spent 5 minutes in a car driven in anger.

Consoles can do fun, cute games like LBP, and should. Sports games also work great. But they're all on the 360 as well, and are cheaper (and the controller is better for the 360 when you're over 10 years old).

Has the PS3 finally got a game worth buying? I think so.
the688 on 19 Oct '08
sounds like great fun and a great review. Not sure if I will get it though not a platformer fan.

I'll be getting little big planet and resistance 2 i think.

The other 2 i'm not so interested in, decent metacritic scores but nothing special(played bioshock in 2007).

Gears 2, fable 2, banjo, left4dead sound a bit more exciting Very Happy
blagger on 4 Nov '08
Here's one for you to put in your pipe and smoke suiv. This weeks games release chart sales in the states. In order:

1. Fable 2 (360) - 705,162

2. Wii sports (Wii) - 206,139

3. Wii fit - (Wii) 168,419

4. Little big planet (PS3_ - 164,434

5. Far cry 2 (360) - 116,358

So does that make Fable 2 the better game Suiv? I'd like to see your take on this.
nottsville on 4 Nov '08
Also just for suivaloom, here's another ps3 vs 360 head to head gaming round up:

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=282241

As you can see, the 360 wins on every game again.
Bioshock has some major problems on the ps3 as can be read there.
Blurry bioshock as they call it on the ps3 fails to match an old 2007 xbox360 game.
Lot's of rumours there of ps3 games not running at the full res either(no doubt to keep a playable framerate going).

I like the ps3, i own both machines(but heavily favour my 360).
The 360 is the better gaming machine, it's so obvious.
Graphics, framerate and ease of programming teach the ps3 a thing or two.
And it's a year older than the ps3(sheesh!!!).
blagger on 4 Nov '08
In terms of the platform elements, imitation is flattery in terms of physics from mario land Very Happy many have tried to replicate mazza but have failed so interms of platforming fair enough. But you have to admire the building sections and the social side of the game, but is it going to change PS3 fortunies, maybe for a few weeks or maybe a months, like a halo effect or a big game like that, but for once PS3 fans are going to have to put up with what Ninty fans have for a decade your in last place ner nicky ner ner, your nintendo's for kids, just accept it and move on have some humility.
stormchasing1000 on 4 Nov '08
Good to see the PS3 FINALLY getting some decent titles.
Robzy1990 on 4 Nov '08
I preferred the version with the religous pop songs.
philgreaaaaaaaat on 5 Nov '08
I presume LBP is Sonys Anti-Viva Pinata. Their definitive family based game. I'm sorry, but I don't think this will work. Especially since we all know boobies are more fun, and the highlight of many pub conversations...
AegisK on 5 Nov '08
Hmm
English Shmuppet on 6 Nov '08
Well...I've now played LBP and I think it's possibly the best platformer I've ever played - at least in recent years.

Like Mario on acid at times! Razz
