New Dead Space 2 details emerge

More details dropped by US horror site
US magazine Game Informer has gone on sale, spilling a ton of beans on Dead Space 2. Naturally no major US mag release goes unblogged and the Rely on Horror site has divulged a wealth of details on the eagerly anticipated horror sequel.

We've selected some of the juicier highlights for your delectation, but if you really want an in-depth analysis, head on over to Rely on Horror. Naturally there's a bunch of spoilers ahead, so beware if you want to keep your Dead Space 2 playing experience pristine. Anyway here we go:

  • Dead Space 2 will be set three years after the original Dead Space.

  • The action won't be confined to a single ship like the Ishimura this time. Instead the outbreak of Necromorphs happens on a densely populated space station.

  • Zero Gravity has changed radically too, Isaac will be able to control the direction of his flight and start drifting through space, but he'll also be able to shoot in mid-air. Win!

  • A big aim for the design team is to make Dead Space 2 'scarier, but with better pacing', and also to include more epic moments.

  • Most awesome of all, multiplayer (woot) is teased! You will be able to 'strategically dismember your friends'.

Seems Dead Space 2 is shaping up nicely and we can't wait to don our pressure suit and wield a plasma cutter again next year, when the game is due for release.

Wow the inevitable multiplayer for the sequel. Seriously why does every new game have to have multiplayer nowadays?? I just want a good single player game. If I want multiplayer I'll play MW2 or left for dead. I'm sick of inappropriate games having multiplayer (Bioshock 2 anyone?) DeadSpace was all about atmosphere, Multiplayer just doesn't suit it.

I hear you there. Soe games don't seem to need multiplayer. Concentrate on the single player I say. I don't want multiplayer bolted on, especially if it detrimental to the single player experience.

So why is Dead space inappropriate to have MP?
Not everyone wants to play MW2 or L4D2 and Bioshock Capture the sister mode looks awesome.
So why cant they capture atmosphere then in MP? Did you ever play Condemned 2 MP mode capture the evidence? that had atmosphere. If done right then theres no reason why this cant be good, admittedly they need a serparate team to work alongside the Single player campaign but if they developers take their time with MP theres no reason why any game cant have it, as i said not everyone wants to play them two games you mentioned although they are excellent examples of a great MP game.
NEOnburN9 on 10 Dec '09
Agreed in regards to MP functions for a game like "DS" are not a natural extension of the game, IMO; the entire premise of "DS" is that you are one of few, or even a lone, survivor(s) in the cold, inhospitable environment of space struggling to survive and escape to safety while trying to figure out what the hell is going on. Still, as long as the SP campaign is good I don't give a wooden nickel what they do with MP. This sounds brilliant! A populated space station and at least one space ship to explore and shoot at just about anything that so much as twitches! Very Happy Yes please to more clever zero-g environments (as long as it's not the mainstay of the game).
The_KFD_Case on 10 Dec '09
I'm not really bothered if they include MP or not, but i'd like to see a little variation.

I remember playing the first few levels on Dead Space and being genuinely nervous about navigating corridors. I have never felt so chilled playing a game.

Two thirds in though and there's nothing new and I feel like i'm grinding towards the end.

Variation please.
H0P5 on 10 Dec '09
I think that some games do not need multiplayer as sometimes it doesn't suit the game, such as for Bioshock 2 and Dead Space 2. These two games were successful from the story and atmosphere, and it seems that mulitplayer is added and this usually means that the single player experience suffers as a result. Crying or Very sad
cheesyfishface on 10 Dec '09
I'm getting a bit of a Doom 3 vibe from it, setting wise, which is definitely not a bad thing in my book. Also, did anyone read the part about the new enemies in the link?, they sound....interesting to say the least. Reading through the link it also sounds like they have a lot of work done on the game already.

Good stuff all round, just don't go the Resi 5 route with it please Visceral games, eh?. We want another survival horror not an action adventure.
flash501 on 10 Dec '09
I thought I'd be flamed for this but looking round people seem to feel the same. why the hell does every single game ever created need to have multiplayer? multiplayer should be cut out of this game seriously!
Marlonjb on 10 Dec '09
All depends how the multiplayer is done. Christ if you dont like it, dont play it. Are people actually moaning about a game having too many features these days!? It could work if one player played as Issac with some weapaons and everyone else played as the necromorphs, having to work together to take down a heavyly armed foe. Would be pretty scary for the guy playing as Issac as he would be on his own against player controled monsters who would be more clever than the AI on how and when they attack him.
NinjaWizard on 10 Dec '09
I think if the MP mode is like L4D Versus mode, this could be quite good. In the sense that one person will play Isaac, whilst everyone else plays the Necros and they try to stop Isaac from completing a level. That way the single player will pan out differently to the multiplayer. Choose your spawn points and wait patiently for Isaac to come along before everyone jumps out and maims him. I think from a lone player's PoV that could actually be quite creepy... not knowing where the enemy will be and how controlled Necros will react. That was one of my problems with DS1... knowing that something was going to jump out at nearly every point. I became desensitized to it. But playing MP with no-one jumping out until the very end of the level would make me s**t bricks. I'd enter a false sense of security. I’d see the end of the level and go running towards it, then BHAM! The sweet embrace of death.

EDIT: Just read the post from the guy above... great minds eh?
MPH on 10 Dec '09
Yeah it looks like they missed a trick with the multiplayer. Like I said in another post, they should of gone for co-op multiplayer but you both start in different locations and have to rely on each other completing certain tasks for each other to continue with you just staying in touch by the mic. That would still kept the atmosphere and brought something new to the game. This dismembering friends crap seems like fun for about half hour then its back to MW2 methinks.
spooney100 on 10 Dec '09
My concern over MP is how much it might detract from the development of the single player. Here's hoping EA don't do an Infinity Ward and give us a 5 hour SP campaign "because the multiplayer makes up for it"

Also, half the time pople will just play these modes until they've got all their achievements/trophies, then wander off back to CoD.
GTCzeero on 10 Dec '09
Dont really care about MP in Dead Space 2, if it turns out well then that a bonus.

On the other hand the Devs seem to know where the first Game didnt really deliver (actual scares, for me anyway), so heres hoping the SP campaign is more varied, scarier and has some outstanding set pieces.

If it does then they'll have a real winner on their hands.

Exactly, I love Left4Dead and if Dead Space did something similar but with its own twist like what we highlighted, it would work very well I think.
NinjaWizard on 10 Dec '09
Agreed Stonecold- I thought that creepy noises and a few jumpy bits aside, Dead Space was a walk in the park. It was more action than horror- the necromorphs are an awesome creature and could be really scary- but since Isaac's armed to the teeth, there's not a lot to worry about really.

Still, a great game- and it was a better than Resi 5 by a large margin. As far as MP goes, I'm not sure. The original Dead Space I finished, then traded in. I had no incentive to play through it again (especially if it wasn't scary the first time round) Maybe MP would add some longevity to it? ... Then again it could screw up the single player... but then again it could work... but then again (splat- head explodes).
MrPirtniw on 10 Dec '09
You will be able to 'strategically dismember your friends'.

That could be frikkin' awesome! Imagine dismembering your mate's arm yet they're still able to shoot you with the other one (albeit with less accuracy), or taking out their legs so they can't move but can still return fire (a bit like the Last Stand perk in CoD games) Very Happy
dark_gamer on 10 Dec '09
i'm beginning to get the feeling that visceral are going to do an RE5 and reveal all of the game through news and trailers and blatantly ruin it all. come to think of it i remember them showing the hive mind on the release trailer, way to f**king ruin the end boss before anyone had played it, dicks.

Genius.

What a cracking idea this is.

That could be very cool if, as you mention, it is done well. Nonetheless I hope that the SP experience is the top priority for this game.

Ouh! I like that idea as well for MP!

P.S. @chumps: I found that link hilarious! Laughing
The_KFD_Case on 10 Dec '09
that does sound brill. A multiplayer where you don't actually see the other player half the time would be brilliant for a horror game.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 10 Dec '09
As long as the games as good ( or better ) than the first and the multiplayer has no achieves or trophys, I dont care about it having a multiplayer aspect. If the MP is any good though, bonus.
MrMoobs on 10 Dec '09
As long as Singleplayer AND Multiplayer is done CORRECTLY, then I'll have no complaints.

"Christ if you dont like it, dont play it. Are people actually moaning about a game having too many features these days!?"
-------------------------------

I'm not moaning about the game having "too many" features I just don't think Multiplayer should be in it. RE5 was ruined because of MP and more than likely Dead space will go the same way as so many other games and just go overboard with a feature it doesn't need. Oh yeah this is just my opinion if you like MP great but personally I'm getting a bit sick of every game pandering to the MP or Co OP crowds. like I said (and in my opinion) it already ruined one horror franchise (RE was ruined as soon as it became an action game CO OP then MP just hammered it further) and it looks set to do the same to this. I really hope it doesn't though.

It wouldn't ruin it if the co-op multiplayer was done correctly, it would actually add to the game.
spooney100 on 10 Dec '09
It's all about sales people, multiplayer = more copies sold. It makes me quite sad really.

Other than that, looks like this is going to be epic. Can't wait.

much better article.

school? church? noticable upgrades for your suit (obviously after seeing that picture, it's clear your knee armor expands)...
sealed eyed kids? speedy flanking enemies? lasso'ing enemies?

ching chingggggggg.

I was very happy reading this article til it came to the multiplayer part, Dead Space 2 dosent need this. Me and other gamers who prefer single player gaming can now kiss goodbye to a platinum trophy and any DLC.

I don't think MP will necessarily sink the SP experience of "DS 2", however I share the exact same sentiments as you do in general in regards to SP vs. MP.

I get what you mean, I liked RE5 and enjoyed playing through it with a friend, but yeah, it wasnt scary. I think it was possible for it to be co-op and be scary, but RE5 failed at that. Didnt stop me enjoying the game though.
But anyway, lets hope Dead Space is cracking scary game if your playing single or multiplayer.
