Nintendo's two-screen handheld has become the biggest-selling games console in UK history, knocking PS2 off its high horse.
The DS blistered past 10.05 million sales in week 47 of 2009, according to Gfk-ChartTrack figures, having been on sale since March 2005. That beats down PS2 which currently sits at the 10.02 million mark after nine years on sale, having released in November 2000.
That, as Nintendo points out, equates to almost a DS for one in every six people in UK. And that's before the mental Christmas buying season is over. And don't forget the DSi XL is out next year, which seems to be doing pretty well in Japan.
NINTENDO DS PASSES 10 MILLION SALES TO BECOME BEST EVER SELLING CONSOLE IN UK HISTORY
- Unique and intuitive video game console helps to broaden appeal to new non-traditional audiences-
10th December 2009: Figures released today courtesy of GfK Chart-Track, the UK's leading music, video and software performance and sales tracking company, reveal Nintendo's market leading handheld console, Nintendo DS, has now sold over ten million units in the UK, making it the best selling console of any kind in the territory's history.*
Since its launch in the UK on 11th March 2005, almost one in six people now own a Nintendo DS system. It has now outsold the previous record holder, which has been on sale in the UK for over nine years in less than five!**
Nintendo's Touch Generations range of software, which has been expanding the definition of video game, has resonated strongly with people of all ages, extending its appeal to a non-traditional gaming audience, which now sees people aged between five and 95 picking up and playing Nintendo DS consoles. The achievements of titles such as Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is You Brain? and More Brain Training alongside recent launches including 100 Classic Book Collection and 42 All-Time Classics, has seen the Nintendo DS system significantly expand the audience traditionally associated with videogames. As well as sons and daughters, mums, dads and even grandmas and granddads across the UK can be seen getting to grips with their Nintendo DS systems.
That's amazing to of achieved that in just 5 years on sale. While it would be easy to forget the price difference between the machines for parts of their life (Ł299 for PS2 at launch and slowly declining) its still incredible though have managed that and while remaining at the same price as when it launched five years ago (Ł99). I think the key to this was Nintendo managing to convince people that you can have one than one DS is each household, it many cases enough for each member of the family.
Sony got to 10 mill with only 2 console versions the Chunky launch model and the slim. plus they haven't made PS2's for nearly 3 years now so no Sales to add to the figures.
the DS is still going and has 3 current models on sale plus the original so thats 4 models in total DS, DS Lite, DSI and the DSI XL It's no wonder it over took the PS2 sale figures..
Had Nintendo done what Sony and the PS2 did at the same time with only the Ds and DS lite i would be more impressed.
by the way i do have a DS lite myself so this isn't any hating on Nintendo or the Ds just the fact that it's not that hard to beat something when your still making and selling them and the previous record holder isn't.
No surprise really, the amount of adverts on TV advertising their games. Most of the games advertised are poor as well, which is a stupid thing to do. Who cares about dressing up your female character, just advertise games people want to play. The adverts with Ant & Dec in also make me want to cut my eyes out with a tin opener.

That doesn't make sense. The DS has sold the same in about half the time. How is that not impressive? So all of the current gen consoles are going to outsell the PS2 are they, cos they're still making and selling them?

But they are. Wii sports reort, wii fit plus, new super mario bros, assassins creed2 and MW2.
They're the games i've seen the most ads for recently and are also the top 5 games in the charts at the mo.
