Review aggregator Metacritic has named PS3 Platform Of The Year (hear the ground shaking).
According to the site, Sony's console played home to the highest quality titles during during 2009, edging out Microsoft's previously dominant Xbox 360.
"Although Xbox 360 finished with the highest number of positively-reviewed titles (88 games receiving a Metascore of 75 or higher), and though Nintendo's Wii had the largest total number of releases (a whopping 362, or almost one per day), the PS3 console showed the best overall game quality for the year. Among other factors, five of the 10 highest-scoring games in 2009 (for any platform) were PS3 titles, including the year's top game: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
"The popular Wii platform had a poor year in terms of game quality, with critics liking just 28% of games released for the platform," the site added.
You can check out Metacritic's Game Platform Power Rankings here.
Pointless? No, it shows who is being most strict about whom they hand out licences to. Nintendo will licence anything (which is actualy a good thing IMO as there is then heathy competition) whereas most PS3 games are Sony's own.
Wait. "Uncharted 2" is the year's game? And here I thought that "MW2" was supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, if one is to believe all the enthusiastic drooling numerous review sites and magazines have carried out...Imagine that.
Just to clarify, I don't doubt "Uncharted 2"'s quality. It looks good and I imagine it's fun to play and I'd certainly rather buy that than "MW2" if I owned a PS3 as it seems to offer a far more comprehensive experience and value for money to boot. I find it laughable the way many of these so-called game journalism outlets seem to have their opinions change with the wind.
I loved Uncharted 2 it was a great title, well deserving of it's praise, and I'm looking forward to God of War & Hard Rain as these titles are ideally made for singleplayer too. My PS3 will always play second fiddle to my Xbox 360 though, as all multiformat & multiplayer titles need a great online service to match them and the great value Xbox Live far surpasses Sony's free (and it shows) PSN network. In the right hands (mainly 1st party) the PS3 can be very impressive, the Xbox 360 though is simply better for all round gaming.
the anticipation has led to an anti-climax. shame on you.
and KFD was that a sarcastic post? i hope so.
MW2 is guff.
i will have UC2 hanging out my letter box when i get in from work.
It was indeed sarcastic, SVD. I was brow beating the games media in that post. Shameless flamebait pandering on the part of CVG as well, although that's hardly a first.
I'm not trying to bait here, but can someone tell me what games, apart from Uncharted 2, made up Sony's apparently stellar year? I only bought one PS3 game, and that was Killzone (UC2 for Xmas baby). I didn't think it was very good. I am now worried I may have missed something!
I did notice that in the metacritic top 10 were both Braid and GoW Collection for PS3, which are a year old XBLA game and a hi-res rework of two old PS2 games respectively. Isn't that cheating a little?
Personally I thought 2009 was a bit of a wash out in the end due to everyone running scared from MW2, and that ended up being less than awesome. 2010 though... That's going to be interesting. Xbox has a load of quality exclusives, and IMO Sony has just as many for the first time. I want The Last Guardian NOW!!

I'm not arguing over the game scores, but as a platform it's about more than games now. In the last year Sony have pulled the PS3 'experience' together nicely. The XMB has improved leaps and bounds. The store works quite well, the movies are now there, Vidzone is a really great free music tool and Iplayer so neatly displayed on your telly is great. And all for free. The Xbox Live experience has run aground on the insistence of an over-priced subscription and a pay wall. It feels more like a true multimedia device than Xbox.

Actually in terms of this article, it is ONLY about the games, that is what Metacritic is, a review score aggregator.
And saying XBL has 'run aground' is a little... Er, ill informed at best, isn't it?
i'd say so. Arcade has far more good original games than PSN or wiiware. In fact i'd put PSN dead last, however the few great games on it are absolutely brilliant. The likes of Trine, Flower and Fat princess at least.
But the problem with the metacritic scores is that its taken as an average. which is the amount of games-their scores. Of course the PS3 was going to come out on top. Its had the fewest new releases. therefore its going to be able to maintain a higher aggregate easier.
I'm amazed that the wiis is so high personally. really does show that there is a big divide between great and crap on the system.
to be honest, i own all 3, but i am still a ps3 fanboy, not that the xbox is bad, it's just that i spent my years Final fantasying on the PS, and it will stay that way for me.
Personally, it has been the same it has always been between the ps3 and xbox. just changes around.
Lol I can't believe all you people are sayingCVG are baiting us. This story isgoing to be on most game news sites - but in your minds they're still baiting us right? Yeah, course
I think this is a fair result to be honest. Aside from multi-platforms PS3 has had a great year with Killzone, inFamous and Uncharted 2 as 3 really good exclusives released on the system, all received well. Next year should also be a good year for the PS3 with like 5 exclusives coming out from Jan - March.
Tail end of next year seems to be a bit weak if I'm honest, for both consoles. Can't name anything coming out after sort of March that I have any interest in.
Metacritic scores are strangely (and secretly) calculated, certain review sites/mags are given a higher priority than "lesser" sites/mags.
Still, I'd agree that the PS3 has been the place for exclusives this year. KZ2, Ucharted 2, Infamous have been more critcally acclaimed. Although Forza 3, L4D2, ODST and the stuff on xbl hasn't been too shabby!
That said, WSR and Tiger 10 have been played alot and I still haven't got muramasa or NSMBWii. Just goes to show the wii is let down on the multi platform stuff as opposed to exclusives.
Good year all round and as people have said plenty of times, 2010 looks even better if the AAA releases deliver.

Still plenty of time to announce games for 12 months away!
Galaxy 2 stands out as the main one for me for end of 2010. And probably the one I'm looking forward to most of all the upcoming games. And there are A LOT to chose from!
i can't think of anything coming out after March at all for the 360 or PS3. No wait. Alan Wake, and Maybe God of War 3. Not bad at all but still slim pickings as both i think are out in May
But i think the games that have got my interest piqued most for next year are all on wii. Mario Galaxy2, The new zelda( at least it'll be revealed at E3) and other M.
i think both the 360 and ps3 had good games, but perhaps uc2 just tipped it in favour of the ps3. interesting that sf4 and mw2 both scored higher on ps3 than 360 too.
*mw2 actually scored 94 on both but placed 2nd on ps3 and 4th on 360 for some reason.
Well ,it was pretty clear ....aside the multiplattform games the PS3 had a lot more exclusives and all of high quality.
Infamous ,Killzone 2 ,MLBA 09 The Show ,Uncharted 2,Ratchet and Clank Future 2 ...thats not counting japanese exclusives as Yakuza 3,Atelier Rorona and Gundam and PSN games as Flower,Fat PRincess ,Critter Crunch ,Shatter ,Crash Commandos ,Cuboid ,Trine etc...
Of course it has had a better year.Already in 2008 it was better with the two GOTY as MGS4 and LBP(and I would add the then overlooked Valkyria Chronicles).

i think your post is proof, if any was needed, that we all have different tastes.
well done to Sony. It shows that they are producing very good games for their console. As is the 360 and Wii. Uncharted 2 is amazing. Metacritic is a very good site and I use it alot for game reviews, however i believe they shoudn't rank consoles, stick to the games. Lets hope this causes more competition between the console formats, which can only benifit us gamers! =)

That would be why they use the median metascore then.
Which can still favour a system with less games if they score highly since each title rated will have more of an impact. Conversely this can also be a weakness if a title gets poor reviews. Similarly the system with more games will be more cushioned from one bad review, but will need far more positive ones to lift it up.
In short: unless each of the parties are compared on an equal amount of games, and the exact same games, the results are going to be at least somewhat skewed. Such a setup would however fail to take in to account relevant samples, so really, neither system is anywhere near perfect and thus at best serve as a guiding indicator rather than gospel truth...Then again, those scores are based on game journalists' personal opinions which may, or may not, be worth the bits of data they occupy online.

You rarely ever get equal population sizes in data analysis and that's exactly why you use a median rather than an average. A median value isn't as prone to skew or error as an average value is. If you think your data might have a few outliers that might skew the result then the median is the most accurate indicator. The standard deviation for the PS3 data is smaller than the rest, though not by much while the Wii's is significantly larger than the rest. You can argue over the meaning of the results until the cows come home for all I care but their analysis method is good.
Hmmm when I got my PS3 on lauch day back in 2007 people spent the first year moaning that there was no good games etc etc blah blah blah. Now its in a postion to produce a year with many quality titles people still moan. Strange really...........
I agree! 2009 was PS3's year and Metacritic was by no means critical towards the 360 but it's fair comment that the PS3 had the better year.
I'm sure the Xbox will try the damnest to 'win' the title in 2010. It's only going to be good for the consumer...As for the Wii, another 5 Mario games 2 more zelda games, another 2 Metroid game, re-release some more Pokemons and in desperation maybe re-release F Zero?! If Nintendo didn't have such a good back catalogue they'd have been dead and buried years ago!!! (I apologise to all the Wii fanboys who are going mad with anger right now, it was a bit tongue in cheek as I love Mario, Zelda, Shamus and Captain Falcon!)

I'd hardly describe the method as "good"; it will have to suffice until someone, somewhere comes up with something better (if ever).
HITMANBAZZA PostPosted: 12 Dec 09 10:47 am Post subject: Well Not surprised Really No matter what shop I go into I have to queue just to look at the Ps3 games. Where as the 360 games has no bugger there!!
Lol you are joking? Queue just to look at games for the ps3 ??? Sorry We xbox owners just buy games We don't look . I own a ps3 as well and I spend no more time Glazing at ps3 games as the xbox ones . Don't bring your little fantasies here please .
I was really surprised by the lack of quality titles on Xbox 360 this year.
PlaySation 3 delivered ...
Killzone 2 Infamous Ratchet and Clank Crack in Time Uncharted 2 with D Souls White Knight and Yakuza an import away.
Xbox 360 delivered ...
Halo ODST (extended add on) GTA4 donwload content L4D (year old, uses same engine, some new ideas, solely online) Forza
Lives arcade games or PSNs downloads dont really count as full blown games.
Ah, a list... Who saw this coming? It was always gonna happen, and it was always gonna be from either starsail or that oher nutjob whose name I've managed to remove from my memory.
Seriously, should a console be measured merely by it's exclusives? There are more than enough multi-platform games out there, sorry, GREAT multi-platform games to really make it not that relevent. Just be happy there are great games out there, whether they appear on the 'opposition' or not should be irrelevent.
True bill, the very same great multiplatform games also on PS3 but it has the benifit of its 2009 exclusives aswell.
Exclusives count because rivalry generates quality and its all good for us gamers, just wish MS made a bit more of an effort this year other than a quick sequel, download content and an add on. Not fair on Xbox fanbots if you ask me.
PS3 has stepped the game up; MS should follow suite rather than relax its fat greedy body on its anticipating fanbase.
With …
D Souls, White Knight Last Guardian GOW 3 Heavy Rain Mod Nation Pixel Dot Gran Turismo 5
among others lining up for a European release in 2010, MS better have more up its sleave other than …
You will have to excuse me for not placing much faith in a supposed Xbox 360 exclusives list compiled by a self-professed and known rabid PS3 fanboy. Accrue some impartial credibility first...The same goes for any of the other platforms' fanboys/girls.
Condomman if you own both consoles then why do you sound so bitter?? I am merely saying what I see like the tv show catchphrase (Say what you see) I find it hugely frustrating that You have to queue to look at games for my Glorious shiny baby!!
starsail and his list of exclusives and youve forgotten games again on purpose like splinter cell conviction and fable 3 and all the natal games and obv you do this on purpose because your shaking in your reebok trainers and xbox live arcade games are looking amazing with serious sam and perfect dark
hitman bazza you sound very creepy when you said shiny baby, another reason i traded mines in full of creeps and xbox section is bare with people? haha well i work in gamestation and we had to shorten the ps3 section is full of chavs whilst the 360 section is packed with normal people.
to wrap this up i get the strange feeling that hitmanbazza, starsail and only_777 are the same people after being a memeber for a while there the only ones who appear to be paedos that put lists up constanly and think its acceptable to hump with there paedostation
19 PS3 games rated 90 or above, 6 of them console exclusive.
25 360 games rated 90 or above, 10 of them console exclusive.
But, you do have to own a PS3 to play the GOTY in my opinion...
Hmm ,looking close from those 25 360 exclusives we can find things like Orange Box that is in the PS3 too ,and others as Guitar Hero 2 and Graw that the PS3 has the posterior and superior iterations (GRAW2 and GHIII-V)...alongside some DLC as Portal and The Lost and the Damned that should be included in GTAIV in all justice. They are not full fledged games. Not to mention some of the games arent 360 exclusives but available in the PC too (Gears 1,ME 1).
I really dont see the 360 library as superior anymore.

Crackdown 2, Alan Wake, Mass Effect 2 Halo Reach.
Out of interest Demon's Souls keeps appearing on your lists yet is only available on import do you have info on a euro release that no one else has?
For me off of your list I want: WKC Last Guardian
Alan Wake Mass Effect 2
I would say DS too but not until it gets a Euro release.
I'm sure both consoles will have more exclusives on the way.
I've updated both lists, considering I was missing some PS3 titles aswell (not just 360)
PS3 D Souls, White Knight Last Guardian GOW 3 Heavy Rain Mod Nation Quantum Final Fantasy Online 3D Dot Star Ocean: The Last Hope International Gran Turismo 5 DC Universe Online Agency The Agent God of War Collection Disgaea MAG Final Fantasy Verses
Xbox 360 Splinter Cell Conviction Fable 3 Crackdown 2 Alan Wake Mass Effect 2 Halo Reach.
I also didn't highlight downloaded games as they're not the reason to own the console but PS3 already has access to some of the best like Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy 7 not to mention newer games such as PJ Shooter.
You assumption that I'm the same member as other users is truly hilarious, you reference to paedophilia is not. The PS3 section my local Gamestation is bigger than the Xbox 360 section, although thats probably because its stuffed in the corner to keep the kids out of the way lol.
Not to mention some of the games arent 360 exclusives but available in the PC too (Gears 1,ME 1).
When the term 'exclusive' is used, it is generally assumed to mean 'won't be on any other console'. Let's be fair, does anyone really see the PS3, Xbox and PC competing with each other? Hardly. The PC stands on a plateau all on its own - and a decent PC is LEAGUES ahead of PS3 AND Xbox360 in terms of 'oomph' too (not to mention number of exclusives...).
Also, I would like to point out that exclusives aren't necessarily an indication of quality - go take a look at the Wii...

again you miss games out what about apb or champions online? haha you know f**k all about games, and you list includes games that no one has heard of or cares and MAG that shocking 30 mins 2 get into a match no thankyou
Calm down calm down ... why do people always get so angry, this is a discussion on video games remember
Moving on, the consoles (both Xbox 360 and PS3) are better gaming platforms than PC. Sure a multi grand PC may offer better graphics (although Gears 2 and Uncharted 2 are up there along with Crysis) but the range of games available on the consoles show that PCs are best used for browsing the internet and buring movies etc.
lol pc gaming is dead lmao. oh yaeh u jst remebered 3 more eclusives to the 360s list metro 2033 whish is the new decades half life ad we get crysis 1 and 2 lol
