Nintendo platforms dominated US console sales in November, according to stat tracker the NPD Group.
DS and Wii shifted 1.7 million and 1.26 million units respectively, comfortably outpacing the competition.
In the fight for third place, Xbox 360 jumped back ahead of PS3 - Sony's console had outsold its nearest rival for the previous two months following a price cut and the PS3 Slim's release.
Meanwhile PSP sold 293,900 units and the ageing PS2 a more than respectable 203,100.
"All hardware systems realised an increase over October but one would expect that from seasonality alone," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "I was really impressed by the performance of the PS2, which after 109 months in market is still experiencing strong sales.
"While there has been a lot of focus on Wii sales as compared to last year, the system was still the best-selling console system by a margin of 54 per cent. At this same point in the PS2 lifecycle, the PS2 was down in unit sales by 23 per cent over the previous year, but as history has shown, it continues to have a great deal of life left in it. So focusing on a comparison to Wii's stellar 2008 performance masks the reality of just how well this system is selling."
But what really matters is the worldwide figures surley? not just one continent, in which the the ps3 sold more, doesnt make sence that cvg would just show one continents figures strange that. heres the chart for you all

I just bought a PS3 so we're a 2 console family for the first time. I have to say I'm impressed. In many ways it makes the 360 look a little childish, the NXE vs XMB for starters. In other ways it seems they've dropped the ball. Why won't it recognise my iPod, or 8g memory stick and what's with the 10 year old controller with analogue sticks in the wrong place? Then, gamewise, Killzone 2 is undoubtably the most stunning looking game I've ever played and it scales heights the 360 will never achieve. Uncharted 2 looks utterly fantastic; gameplay seems a little linear at the moment but then I'm used to playing sandbox games these days. But with all that, let's not talk about 3rd party titles, it's embarrassing. And those analogue sticks? Well they're in the wrong place, but beautifully subtle when compared to the 360. I'm very happy with my purchase overall; I shall always buy 3rd party titles on 360 and only take the cream of the PS3, enjoying it's Blu Ray, iPlayer and competent web browser skills in the meantime. I really didn't think they'd be so different!

Yes, you're probably right....but don't call me Shirley.
Surely you jest?
Just to nitpick: The US is not a continent. It is hower the most populous country in North America (and third most populated country in the world).
That said, I agree that total global sales are the supreme authority on where a product falls on the sales podium. Analysing specific markets is useful in terms of developing that market and new or ongoing sales campaigns.
Sony should be very pleased to be so close behind the '360, particularly in the current financial climate where consumers are more likely to buy cheaper products.
you don't see hotpoint saying they're going to outwash bosch by 3:1 this christmas do you?
still can't believe those ps2 figures though!
Yeah, whom exactly keeps on buying them? People who want a DVD player that has access to an extensive and readily affordable gaming library? People in developing countries where the PS2 may still carry more clout than in more developed markets?
Sony should be very pleased to be so close behind the '360, particularly in the current financial climate where consumers are more likely to buy cheaper products.
There is that but then the 360 should be outselling the Wii on that premise surely?

That's because they know Zanussi's new, more accessible, one touch washing machine is going to blow them all out of the water. Even kids and young men can use it!
Although I go for miele personally. Hate these other cheap ass, noisy products. I want prestige!!

Er, but if you use the graphs on that site, and set it to just America, it reckons the PS3 is about double the 360. Completely different from the NPD data. Vgchartz is not reliable.

Tramp!
Go enjoy your cheap ass white machine, not so cheap when you add all the "optional extras" like a door seal, water pipes and wireless plug.
LG do this all out of the box and the quality shines through. You go enjoy your piece of s**te with its noisy spin cycle and flashing red lights of washing finished.

I'd forgotten that the Arcade was cheaper than the Wii! But I'm baffled by the Wii's popularity anyway; if the Arcade were more expensive than a Wii, the 360 would still be the better choice.

Um VGChartz isnt official in the slightest. All they do is estimate, and they tend to always be wrong. They were waaaaaay off with the 360 predictions this month for example. And anyway, the US is a bigger game market than Japan and EU combined, so its definitely important. After the big price drop, the slim release, the huge new marketing campaign etc lol the PS3 still failed to outsell the 360.

Mr Gazza_Be, are you forgetting about MW2 bundle? That is the reason why Xbox 360 outsells PS3 by 100k..........(100k is not that huge).

So the MW2 bundle helped 360 sales in November, and the rebundled slim (but still pretty fugly) PS3 helped PS3 sales in previous months.
Or is it only cheating if the bundles are 360 ones?

Exactly! I hate it when PS fanboys talk like that. Lets not forget that the ONLY reason the PS3 started performing well in Sep/Oct was because of the price cut and new slim.

Regardless of which poison you pick, 100K out of a sample of 700-800K is not an insignificant share of the total.
am I the only person who thinks that the PSP's sales are embarrassingly low considering that not only has the DS wiped the floor with it but the PS2 sales are not that far off it!
the US is the most important territory, thats why. overall 360 is number 2 install base wise, i dont know if you spin doctors can do math, but you should try and see how much the ps3 wold have to sell every month to catch up and pass the 360 in overall console sales, yeah and when you do you will see its not likely to happen in the next 2 years!

sony and x360 is 90% chav user-base CALLING THEM SELF'S CORE GAMERS the very people who got into ps1 ps2 and followed con with ps3 support are the very chavvy like folks who didn't touch Amiga nes snes etc then top down gta hit and other CHAV aimed games
and all of a sudden these morons are hardcore gamers WHAT A CROCK OF s**t EVERY PS3 OWNER I KNOW IS A CHAV

No doubt and there is no doubt in features wise the PS3 offers a better deal. I am also baffled by the Wii's popularity still going strong although the actual games do not seem so popular sales wise.
The great thing about the PS2 is, a lot of the games are really really dirt cheap now. Just go on amazon and look at the 2nd hand games. Most of them are under a quid.
The really interesting thing is the Tie in ratio, often the 360 boasts a big lead is this, but clearly coming from the states as europe is neck and neck too.
I can believe these figures...I love my PS3 but they got it wrong in the sense that they didn't anticipate the credit crunch and how many sales they were going to lose out to clueless parents buying for their young ones. I'm sure the numbers will be similar for UK too. All the big retailers have set their stall out with 360 Arcade bundles at 150, Wii bundles 150 but PS3 250gb 2 games for 250 and if you didn't know anything about these consoles, as most parents probably wouldn't, it'll be a toss up between the 2 'cheaper' consoles, it's a no brainer why the PS3 isn't reaching its sales potential...

i think what the bare bones you or anyone want arent hardware sales, its software sales, money is either lost or very little made in terms of hardware sales if youre bothered about how much each 'side?' is making...
wooo, just read one guys comments(and i think you all may know who, just look for the caps lock freak) but im not doing him the justice of quoting him.... great quote i once heard on a chat show that can be applied-
idiot - "theyre a blemish on society,we live in a country of free speech and expression and i intend to use it"
educated person - "yes it is a country of free speech and expression, and because we have those rights the vast majority choose to ignore such comments from idiots like you"
(the debate was on gay people in society, but the same rule can really be applied on these forums.. yes?)

@ StokedUp, eltonbird, The_KFD_Case. I'm afraid you're all wrong...
As someone who uses VGChartz quite regularly, I suggest you look at the figures again. VGChartz is as useful as any other stat measuring tool. It takes Brett & co a while to collect all the figures because for certain sales areas it takes longer for data to be called in. VGChartz does go back and adjust where necessary which I consider to be commendable.
VGChartz offers transparency where NPD doesn't. The only thing that makes NPD "revered" is because it's an official source. That doesn't make NPD's methods any more correct, just look at the variety of reports on "alleged" climate change, qualified people can't even agree on how / if the world is changing, let alone if so - by how much.
Anyway, to the crux of the matter. People comparing NPD U.S. data and VGChartz America data are wrong... To use an analogy, you're comparing the number of "keepy-uppies" a reasonably co-ordinated schoolboy can manage using a tennis ball and a basketball.
VGChartz reports on "America(s)" which you'll note is a continent that includes the USA and Canada (where the PS3 & X360 both sell). The NPD numbers are listed by country (see npd.com) and in this particular case refers to the USA. eltonbird, I'm sure you didn't manually tally the week on week sales when you looked at the VGChartz stats.
Don't worry, I'll be back again soon to trumpet how much the PS3 is caning the X360 according to XYZ Corp's stats.
THE TREY BROTHERHOOD RULES!
Still can't believe those ps2 figures though!
Yeah, whom exactly keeps on buying them?
Just FYI mate, it's Latin America that's buying PS2's. The console was only just released there this year!
Exactly! I hate it when PS fanboys talk like that. Lets not forget that the ONLY reason the PS3 started performing well in Sep/Oct was because of the price cut and new slim.
Let us not forget that the PS3 also performed well in November in the USA. December's PS3 USA sales figures will no doubt show another solid performance.
CVG rarely writes to show just how much the PS3 is caning the X360's butt in Japan. CVG rarely writes to show just how much the PS3 is kicking butt anywhere. Now the X360 has had another great month in the USA - why not point it out? Keep with form CVG, I've got your number!
Worldwide, the PS3 is closing on the X360. The gap is now around 6M units (previously sat around 8M).
WII NUMBER ONE CONSOLE CLEAR USA NOVEMER DS WELL CLEAR OF PSP AND DOMINATING HANDHELDS
I reject your assertion that insisting the global tally is the final authority on total sales is wrong. The reason why the global total tally is the final authority on worldwide sales ought to be apparent.
As for VGChartz I don't pay much attention to it. The last time I read their tally they admitted having uncertain data which sort of defeats the purpose. That said, I do agree with you that it is commendable of them to keep the tally going until they have incorporated the latest up-to-date figures (which may themselves be flawed for a variety of reasons).
My earlier post was neither for nor against VGChartz, but rather an endorsement of the final tally being the paramount one irrespective of what the sub-totals are for different regional markets since they will all be summed up in the final global tally.
P.S. Regarding climate change, recent reports from external sources on 1,000+ internal e-mails leaked from scientific research institutions on climate change indicate that while inter-rivalry and politics made it into the pot, and does not show some of the researchers' best sides, the fundamental scientific data used to support the claim that human activity is impacting climate change appears sound. How much it will change is still uncertain but there appears (unfortunately,) to be increasing reason to suspect climatic changes can occur far more rapidly than even some of the more pessimistic estimates had initially projected. My advice: don't buy beach front property over the next 30 years at least...
The Call of duty effect in full force, I was surprised how much more it sold on the 360 compared to the PS3, over 4 million on xbox, under 2 million on PS3.
Don't forget Microsoft banned 1 million xbox's because they modified their consoles. I'm sure at least 200,000 people would have went straight out to buy a new console.
I'm feeling awesome because I buy Verbatim brand recordable 80 minute printable CDs instead of Memorex brand recordable 80 minute printable CDs. The latest sales figures are out and they confirm that Verbatim has sold way more recordable 80 minute printable CDs than Memorex!
The fact that my choice of recordable 80 minute printable CDs is being purchased by more people confirms my suspicions that I am awesome! These sales figures complete me. I like to deride those who purchased the Memorex brand recordable 80 minute printable CDs because they have purchased an item which has sold less units than the item I have purchased.
These are the issues I find important in my life. I will always look back and find that focusing on these issues has guaranteed that I personally have achieved a lot. I live my life through the successes of corporations selling bulk produced items, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
