PreviousMAG out January 29 Greenberg: Polyphony's done "years of mini games"  Next

Reggie: It's all about the software

NoA President confident of Nintendo's 'key advantage'
It's all about opinion today. Review aggregator Metacritic has already gone on record to say that the PlayStation 3 was the platform of the year for 2009, arguing that the Sony console produced the best quality titles in 2009 based on its own aggregated ratings.

The heat from that salvo had barely dissipated when Microsoft pitbull Aaron Greenberg entered the fray with his opinion that all Polyphony Digital had released so far from Gran Turismo 5 was a series of mini-games and that .

Now completing the hat-trick, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime has gone on record to in an interview with Bloomberg to state that: "the software peak in this industry should be this year and next year."

A safe enough prediction we'd suggest, given that we're in the midst of a mature phase in the console cycle.

But Fils-Aime, being Nintendo's chief cheerleader, didn't leave it there, despite recent reports of Wii sales suffering a 30 percent slump in the US.

"What we are seeing today is a strong momentum for hardware and software [and] profitability in this industry is in software," said Fils-Aime, clearly thinking of Nintendo's evergreen first-party line-up.

"Our read on the consumer is very strong," continued Fils-Aime, concluding that Nintendo has, "a growing advantage against key competitors."

So much opinion flying around today, ready and waiting for your views in the comments field below.

Basically put, Nintendo see their consumer base as witless parents buying little Johnny another s**te shovelware game. They've no idea and Nintendo like to exploit this fact. Reggie lol, he looks like the grim reaper with a wig.

Well done, Reggie! You got that right. So, when can we expect F-Zero WiiX and Starfox Armada, hm?
Balladeer on 11 Dec '09
I totally agree. Its always been about the software. Something i think MS and Sony seem to forget at times. Yes your machines can do this that and the other, but does it have anything worth playing. Thats what people want to know.

Thats why nintendo's adverts are so effective. they're never about the hardware but the software that comes with it. Most of the guys that bought a wii didn't because it has motion controls or is wireless, but becasue they can play wiisports.

It just happens that its only on wii, or Ds.

Well as Sony and MS saying well you can watch movies on it and go on Facebook, and its in high def. Just makes peopole think. but i already have products that do this. What makes you special. And then they go errr. ummm.

Software is always more important than hardware. You make software with a market and people will buy the hardware. simple as.

yes, its the games that should matter the most, which is exactly why this is a paradox coming from nintendo.

reggie should shut his mouth, in the end the wii only has 5 good games. some mediocre ones and the rest utter crap.

NO ITS ALL ABOUT THOSE PSPGO AND SLIM SALES

Haha, Reggie is a really funny guy. I mean, seriously, Nintendo + strong software lineup are not two things i consider to be synonymous.

Lets see what 'good' games have Nintendo had...Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, NSMB...starting to realise a pattern forming here! Good one Nintendo!

If Nintendo EVER make it to the same generation of consoles as Sony/MS I will give them chance to comment, but until then they can lick my sack. Nintendo have lost all integrity in my opinion. They are all about the profit and not the performance of their product.

have to disagree with the 5 good games thing hotdSurprisedverkill, madworld, dead space:extraction, pro evo 2010,nsmbwii and silent hill this year alone disprove that argument but i do get your point.

this IS a bit rich coming from anyone at nintendo as they've pretty much gone missing this last year in terms of core content. a year and a half back i was bitching to all that 3rd parties never bother on the wii,i never thought that the main amount of wii games i'd play in 2009 would be by 3rd parties.

from cod4:reflex to ghostbusters and the others mentioned above to the flawed the conduit,it's been the 3rd party devs keeping me interested on the wii this year.

even next years ff:cc crystal bearers (well xmas for me,that's importing for ya),no more heroes 2,sky crawlers, tatsunoko vs capcom, sin & punishment 2 and monster hunter tri are 3rd party jobs.

i still expect nintendo to come through with a new starfox (no krystal nintendo, please),pilotwings, waverace and f zero in the next 18 months so it's not going to be too bad.

galaxy 2,zelda,goldeneye 2010 and metroid other m will do 'til then.

Oh look, dick-sucking Nintendo boy is back. You're pathetic. You can't even explain a point intelligently enough without resorting to block capitals like some sort of retarded 11 year old.

At least he's entertaining, though, in the same way as a small loudly-yapping dog with no legs.

This sentence really bugs me, maybe I'll concede that the Wii hasn't been Nintendo's best console in term of top games but you can't deny that Nintendo are probably the best developers ever, no amount of shiny graphics will make this any different.

all i can say is muramasa is f**king sublime. that game has made up for any p**s take you can think of about wii. it is godly.
Sinthetic on 11 Dec '09
oops, forgot about muramasa. another decent wii game this year.

s**t! Forgot about muramasa. Right! Off to Amazon I go!

ORLY?

Well if Nintendo are such good developers then why is it that they keep releasing the same game. Every Zelda game is the same and yeah while it's a great formula, the response from fans EVERY TIME is that 'it's not OOT or MM' - and then we have NSMBWii which is just the DS game made bigger to match the Wiis strength. Mario Galaxy - fun for a bit but it's just the same over and over.

I used to lvoe Nintendo but I am really disappointed that htey've lost their way.

you're right to a point there, every zelda that comes out usually does have the fans complaining it's not on the same level as ocarina but lets be fair, what is?

even an average zelda is better than 90% of games any of us will ever see. i've still got high hopes for the new one, nintendo know the formula needs a shake up. time for miyamoto to overturn some tables.

one thing though: if nintendo weren't so good the entire industry wouldn't rip off their ideas every time they come up with one: d-pads,shoulder buttons, sticks, rumble, motion sensing,sandbox-3d worlds....

now,to each his own and all that but i honestly think mario galaxy is the best thing nintendo have done since ocarina, fully deserving of it's 10/10's across the board. in fact it's my favourite game this gen (including 360 and pc games). i can't remember seeing the same idea too many times over in galaxy, the gravity system felt new. there'd be nods to the 2d games and then the whole world would flip upside down and expect you to keep your sh!t together. it was a sensory assault that i haven't experienced since mario 64 or maybe half life 2. 242 stars and 2 years later i still haven't changed my mind.

tbh i get the impression you're problem isn't the software rather the resolution it's displayed in.

shame that.

I've been playing games for seventeen years now, and I have to say that Super Mario Galaxy is the finest thing I've ever played. I also it consider it to be one of the finest looking and sounding games I've ever played, too.

All Nintendo needs to remember is that the gaming public like a steady drip-feeding of screenshots and new information for their upcoming titles. Spirit Tracks and Mario and Luigi 3 seemed to appear on store shelves with a whimper instead of a bang.

There must be some heavy hitters in development at Nintendo headquarters that the public would be clamouring to hear about. I haven't heard of any new information regarding Galaxy 2 since just after Nintendo's E3 presentation, for instance.
